Hi All,

I live in Kansas where in a lot of places service can be poor or not existent. While visiting my family and my girlfriends family over Christmas, who live in two different areas in Southeast Kansas, where both phone and 4g/3g/1x data signal does not exist from Verizon. US Cellular is the main carrier for service in both areas with great coverage and I noticed that my new galaxy nexus did not automatically connect to the US Cellular network in either location for roaming. I was left with no connectivity at all for the entire weekend :D. I also have three LG Envy 3's that are not roaming either.

My question is there a reason why my galaxy nexus did not automatically connect to the US Cellular network to roam?

Also is there a way to force my phone to connect to US Cellular when I am in these dead zones for Verizon?

Thanks in advance?

As a side note I have the Data Roaming checked in the Mobile network settings and I have the System select set to Automatic.

I was also an Alltel customer that was converted to Verizon, but when I got my Motorola Droid in December 2009 we were required to change our family plan to the Verizon Wireless 700 minute plan.

If it's just data that you didn't get, under Mobile Networks in Settings you can allow data while roaming. It is unchecked by default.

Check the roaming setting under network in the settings section.

just as a PSA , when you check this feature on it will say that you may be charged for data

I called vzw to confirm that you won't get charged as long as you don't leave the US with it checked on

Yea, I have the Data Roaming checked in the Mobile network settings and I have the System select set to Automatic. Thanks though.

I was not getting any phone (ability to make a call) or data signal at all. When ever I would try to open an app that needed data like email app, I would get an error that said no data available.

Thats good to know. Thats what I was thinking.

I would try some of the other settings under Mobile Networks. Like the roaming mode and the preferred network mode and after each change try rebooting.

Data roaming needs to be checked and System select needs to be on Automatic

I'm surprised you weren't able to get Data or phone in Kansas. I'm originally from K.C. but from the city. You must live and have been in some rural areas. I thought Verizon was supposed to excel in these areas were most companies don't.

Did you have this issue with other phones on Verizon?

I'm actually in Wichita, where Verizon gets great signal. But both sides of my family are in rural Southeast Kansas, where Verizen is very hit and miss, which is where I had the problem. US Cellular is the primary carrier outside these small cities in the area. I'm not so sure about Verizon exceling in these rural areas. Alltel was working on that and then was bought by Verizon, and it seamed like Verizon shutdown Alltels cell towers in the area infavor of their own and service went to .

Unfortunally all of my family is on US Cellular due to the poor service Verizon provides so I am limited in the phones I can compare. My GF has a texing/feature phone (LG Envy 3), but we did not check her's when we were back.

Update the other phones (LG Envy3's) are not roaming either and they have been updated using the *228 feature.

Well I broke down and called Verizon Wireless technical support today.

The tech that I spoke with checked the two areas that I go to and confirmed that Verizon is mostly non existent. He then went on to say that the phone should roam in both areas and he did not have any answer as to why it was not roaming.

His solution to my problem was to purchase a prepaid US Cellular phone and forward my calls to it when I am in these areas. I must admit that it is a solution, but what an asinine thing for a Verizon employee to tell a subscriber. He also stated that Verizon just needs to add more towers in the area, which I can almost guarantee will never happen.

So as of now I am still at a loss as to why my phone is not roaming in these areas.
