I've been trying to figure if I was hearing things or not... every time I go back the home screen I will hear a popping sounds, so I disabled the touch sound and it seem to have gone away.

Re: Popping crackling sound fix

This is a known issue on many phones. Each time audio passes through the speaker, you can actually hear the speaker turning off. I suggest doing a test... use a key click or lock screen sound, wait three seconds, and listen for the pop. If this is your issue, I suggest you "star" the following google forum:

Issue 22307 - android - Galaxy Nexus Speaker clicking noise (running Android 4.0.1) - Android - An Open Handset Alliance Project - Google Project Hosting

Good luck.

Re: Popping crackling sound fix

The issue you describe (and the band-aid you stumbled upon) are fairly prevalent. Jury is still out on whether it's a hardware problem or software problem. The pop can be heard when power is cut to your rear speaker.

FWIW your solution just significantly minimizes the number of times your speaker kicks on (and subsequently off) so you didn't actually fix the problem so much as you stopped doing what triggered the problem. It's like the old joke:

PATIENT: Doctor, it hurts when I do this.
DOCTOR: Don't do that

Re: Popping crackling sound fix

this happens to me when i turn the screen off while listening to music. the second i turn the screen back on the popping goes away.

Re: Popping crackling sound fix

i noticed this a few nights ago while trying to be "quiet" while operating the GNex. Also turned off the touch sounds, but you'll still get it occasionally. Not nearly as frequent now, however, thank God.

Galaxy Nexus in-call screeching, popping and crackling

Just about every call I make on this phone causes this issue. I will be talking on the phone and about 10 to 20 minutes into the call I will start to hear really high pitched screeches and squeels occur randomly during the conversation, but the person on the other end never hears it so its only on my end. Im even starting to wonder if it correlates with it getting warm near the earpiece around the same time it starts to happen. Even on speakerphone it still occurs. Hardware issue? Any similar incidents from others?

Re: Galaxy Nexus in-call screeching, popping and crackling

Same issue I'm having.. I contacted Verizon tech support and they told me to return my device for a new one since I'm still in my 14 days. To Verizon tech support it is NOT a "known issue." So they said it was definitely a hardware defect.

Re: Galaxy Nexus in-call screeching, popping and crackling

Thats what Verizon was hinting to me. So odd that the issue is isolated to calling.... and that others are having the EXACT same issue. Im also within my 14 days, but man I hate the exchange process, and with others having the same issue to the T, im scared another one will just do the same. I guess i'll have to give it a shot, absolutely love the phone otherwise so I hope it just works out already :(

Crackling/Popping Speaker and Mic Issues are Hardware Issues

I would return your GNex if you are having these issues. My first GNex had these issues, my second doesn't. That means it is a hardware problem and not something that will be fixed by an update.

Re: Galaxy Nexus in-call screeching, popping and crackling

did you exchange? I did and my second GNex doesn't have this problem so it is a hardware problem.

If it was snapping, crackling, and popping, I would have known exactly what was wrong with your phone. But screeching? Now I'm clueless.

I had the popping and crackling noise, then I updated to a 4.0.3 ROM because in another post someone said it was a software issue that would be fixed in the next updat due to sending too much power to the speaker. Yeah, it got way worse, now a horrible screeching noise that doesn't let me even hear the person at all. I'm outside my 14 days now, hopefully I can still exchange it.

I havent got the screeching or popping during calls however when the phone rings for notifications for texts or emails I sometimes hear the popping or skipping. I even hear it while I'm listening to music and I get a text it- will crackle while the speaker is already on - it even does it through the headphones while I'm listening to music. I am well out of my 15 day window for returns and I don't want to root and rom if that won't fix it.

In the two weeks that I've had this phone it's done the popping, screetching sound twice while I was on a call. It got so bad that it hurt my ear when I got off the phone. I really don't want to have to exchange it or get a different phone, but this is kind of unacceptable. Should this be something that woild possibly be fixed, or do I need to look into the always fun exchange process? I have no issues other than this.
