Galaxy Note 10.1: When will we get KitKat

I think a lot of people hear that someone who has a different brand tablet got "upgraded" to kit kat and want it too WITHOUT really knowing the upside and downside. So i do believe "kit kat upgrade envy" plays a role. Before i sold it, my nexus 7 2013 upgraded to kit kat and certain apps suddenly stopped working, etc. I found it would have been better to stay with the old. In any case there's no proof that kit kat will make the note work better or cause more issues. Btw, my new note 2014 arrives today and i hope its hassle free. I love the note 8 which my wife now has. If i find the 10.1 has issues i'll go back to the 8. I love using the spen.
Kit Kat offers huge improvements in blue tooth. That maybe just an annoyance to you but to others it is a big deal. Kit Kat is optimized for mid range hardware so the tablet should run faster. With the release of Kit Kat Samsung should also have addressed some of the bugs in Touchwiz. Others have mentioned multiuser being important to them.

I do not think wanting the most up to date software has anything to do with jealousy. That would just be silly.

On my S4 there were only upsides in going to KitKat. Okay some (but not all) was due to ditching Touchwiz so not a completely fair comparison. For instances it was great to have bluetooth almost begin to work properly. Apple bluetooth works the way bluetooth is meant to...Android not so much. When dealing with a Samsung device I will always be willing to take the chance and upgrade to the latest and greatest. I generally like Samsung hardware but I am not a fan of their fork of Android.

In fact as I think about it I have never regretted upgrading to a newer version of Android.

I cursed the day I updated to JB on my Droid Razr! The only thing I could tell it did (good or bad) was remove the ability for my car to announce a new text message and read it for me (and offer canned replies if I chose to do so). The feature that was removed from JB is MAP (Message Access Protocol). Without it, (my car's version of Sync), Ford's infotainment center, can't read out text messages.

Kitkat just messed up the storage ext sd card on my S4. I will not be upgrading if it screws my note as well.

and also SpookDroid
I rooted my note 10.1 2014 last week, and OTA updates stopped! When I tried the settings-->general-->about device-->check for updates, it told me that the device was modified, so no updates will be available. I was in tension for a couple of days, until someone over at the xda-developers forum offered me an out. I installed xposed framework, added the wanam module, then Wanam Xposed>Security Hacks>Fake system status. Settings>General>About tablet>software Updates>Check for updates. It returned, "the latest updates have already been installed". Yahooooo! I can get OTA updates now.

Yea I've been a xda member since my first Android phone. That's where I go for most the know how. The communityover there has gotten out of a few tight spots when I thought I for sure was hard bricked.

This has been a known issue with kitkat. But there are developers in the xda forums that know work arounds for this issue. Read up and you'll see. But that same issue you speak of will be effecting the note as well but I know there is a work around for it. There almost always is.

Not everywhere!!

By the way just got KitKat for my S4 if that means anything

Pretty much everywhere. There's an app that's well worth the money if you don't have multiuser and want it really bad. It's called switchMe, it's like 5 or 6 dollars. It has great functionality and security. I cant currently use it on my note 10.1 2014 though I think because I updated to MK1 and it already has multiuser and makes it incompatible or something. That app works flawlessly on my note 10.1 2013 version though. I haven't tried reverting back to see if it works.... now I want to lol

What exactly did it do to the external card's contents?
It does nothing to the contents. What it does is deny 3rd party apps access to the sd card. So for instance if you have "mapswithme" you cannot download maps to your sd card like before so they have to be stored in the main memory.
I know there are ways around it but it is a backward step by Google.

Doubt seriously Samsung would provide card slot and then turn off access to it.... It may be GOOGLES intention to force every one into cloud computing (gag), but SAMSUNG actually controls how OS operates on their devices..... Waiting patiently to see what actually is going on and am not going to be victim of hysteria.... The real issue is if you do not have access to cloud through USB/LAN or WIFI, the cloud concept is absolutely useless........ Long live card slots and data storage cards....

It's not hysteria (just Google it) It does not "turn off access to the SDcard" but only allows approved apps (those that are preloaded or Samsung's own) to write to the card. I am sure there will be a fix but it very evident on my Galaxy S4.

Is there a way to block the update once the tablet is fixated on it? I'm now getting a notification "firmware update downloaded"...When I click it, it offers options of install or postpone. I click "postpone" by my options only seem to be able to do that for 3 hours max.

I'd really rather not keep clicking postpone every 3 hours. ;)

I'd previously had "auto update" selected in settings--so maybe I'm screwed. I've unchecked it now, maybe that's too late.

Any way to just cancel the update?

If you are not rooted I dont see any reason not to take the update, it is an improvement
If you are rooted then you shouldn't be getting the notice, you can just freeze the update app with Titanium

It is a very minor improvement (I have it on my phone, too), but after updating, it will create at least one problem I know of on the card (tested with the phone)---I will no longer be able to modify files from within Mx Player with the card (it will play and delete files no matter where on the card--not rename them).

That's a PITA. It's a minor issue in some senses, but on my tablet, videos is one of the key things that I do.
