Android Central Question

My galaxy note 4 has begun freezing randomly. More times than not, the screen will go black. Efforts to restart the phone sometimes will not work...nothing. Three button method to get it back up is often required. Other times while just sitting, "downloading do not turn off target" will appear and not go off. I've done many of the recommended things, including factory reset. The problem still persists. This problem did NOT come about after a software upgrade but is it possible rooting the phone will resolve this issue or should I consider something more drastic like a motherboard replacement? Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

The problem happens so much that the phone has become unusable. Approximately 70-80% of the time the screen either times out or I manually shut the screen off, the screen will then stay black. I'll usually have to remove the battery and hold the power button for a couple minutes to get it back up. But then after a short period, the screen will not come up again or sometimes the "Downloading do not turn off target" will come up. I have tried Safe Mode to no avail, the problem persists. It's a shame, the phone is nearly 4 years old and is in perfect cosmetic condition, never been dropped and while it has always run hot, its always worked well until about 5 weeks ago.
