After my Note 8 updated to 4.2.2, I also am the victim of the missing sidebar and split screen function and the Pencil function. I have tried suggested means other than a factory reset. In order to do a factory reset I need to do a Backup. :(

I had to figure out how to put the Note in PTP mode to connect to the Helium Console on my desktop computer which took a while, but got it done.

I installed the Helium App and easily did a complete backup to my 32Gb External SD card. The backup function on the Note says it will delete everything, but does that include the External SD card as well or do I need to remove the SD card?

My question is I don't understand, how to the backup restore is done after the Factory Reset, as the Helium App on my Note will be gone. If someone knows the process your help would be greatly appreciated.

Auto Backup was on and it said the backup was stored on my gmail address but I could not figure that one out. I guess Google has it stored somewher, But I did not want to take a chance, hence the Helium App.

Thanks to the Gurus for any help!

Web :)

As an aside shame on Samsung for having a Firmware Update break the device somewhat! Sure not user friendly!

Hello.

You can connect up to your computer and look on your sdcard for a file folder called " Carbon ". Inside that folder will contain the backup. Me, I just used ES File Explorer to ZIP the entire Carbon folder and placed it on my DropBox for safe keeping.

This way if something does go wrong and I loose everything or have to do a factory reset I can just reinstall Helium app, then swap out the Carbon folders with my backup to restore.
