galaxy note with at&t

So I have had the Note for about a week and I popped a SIM that I had from a non-smartphone into the Note. The SIM was from a device that I had on my AT&T family plan. I'm paying $9.99 a month for it ( I would guess you could add a line to any plan, but the family plan has the advantage of shared minutes across all phones). MyFamily Plan for non-smartphone unlimited data is $10 a month.

As others have mentioned since this is an unlocked phone the AT&T network can't recognize that it a smartphone. I'm getting 3G and HSPA+ access. Depending on coverage in my area I've seen download speeds up to 6.5mb down and 1.5mb up.another nice feature at no additional cost, you can turn the phone into a wifi hotspot for up to 8 devices to connect to. I have an iPad2 wifi version that I link to he phone and while it won't pin your ears back, it does a decent job for emails, IM and lite web browsing. I have not tried to run Netfilx yet, I'll test to see how well it buffers and how smooth the play back in on the iPab.

Overall, I pleased with the device and I'm just starting to use the S Pen. As others have mentioned the GPS radio and access to the US amd Russian satellites makes it the most responsive and fastest GPS I have ever used. It's amazing how quickly it loads, locks in, re-routes, etc.

The Bluetooh radio is the best I've used. I think Samsung has a much better radio, firmware and interface than I had with HTC EVo and EvO 3D. I've never had a pairing issues ( with multiple Bluetooth devices) never had it drop signal in the middle of a call, and I have the control from the phone app screen to turn the Bluetooth on or off while on a call. It's as close to Bluetooth perfection as I've seen on a mobile device to date.

I'm still playing with the voice recognition on the device. Have used both the Viigo and the Samsung stock. Both work, and have had a few quirks, but time will tell. It really comes in handy when driving. I ordered the car dock and I'm waiting for it to arrive for the UK. I have the same on for my GS2 Epoc Touch and really like it. I will review and post pics on how the monstrous Note looks mounted to the windshield!

Stay tuned for more as I continue to use the Note as my daily device.

Thanks for the info. I'm wondering if the s-pen would be good to annotate powerpoint or PDF slides during lectures. I have a Asus EEE Slate and the stylus is quite good to annotate the pdfs but the battery life is about 2.5 hours, navigating windows with a stylus is a pain, and it's another device to lug around.

I would just want to try out a sim card to see if it worked without having to enter into a commitment of adding another line for 2 more years. Can I just activate a sim card I buy online with a go phone plan from the AT&T website? That would be sweet.

Is AT&T treating the Note as a smartphone or tablet when it comes to plans? I have an S2, but I'd like to be able to switch between the two. I guess, even if they're treating it as a smartphone outside the US, that doesn't mean they'll do the same here. Does anyone know about this? Any educated guesses?

Yes. Just input the same APN information found in your GSII and the Note will work fine.

In regards to buying the Note unlocked and putting in an AT&T SIM from a former phone (grandfathered unlimited smartphone data), will I have access to the AT&T OTA updates (particularly ICS)? The main gripe I'm hearing with people that have purchased the unlocked version is that Samsung hasn't said that they plan to support it, whereas it'd be up to the individual carriers if you bought it on-contract. However, most of the latter crowd was referring to using it with another carrier (T-Mobile, Sprint, etc..). Would Unlocked + AT&T SIM be the same thing as purchasing it on-contract? (I'm trying to avoid signing another 2-year contract with AT&T because they're absolutely awful). Obviously future updatability plays a huge role in the purchasing decision!

You mean an unlocked international version of the Gnote? No. Even though you put a ATT SIM and configure it to work on ATT's HSPA+ network, you will not receive updates from ATT. You would receive OTA updates via wifi for the CSC (country sales code) of the GNote you have.

For Example my GNote is CSC DBT which is unlocked for Germany, which was the first country to launch the GNote. I get OTA updates from DBT which so far there have been 3 since the phone launched in November.

If you have an ATT SIM in your phone it would not be like incurring another contract unless you sign up again.

Hope this makes sense.

Thank you! That explanation was helpful! I understand that I wouldn't be obligated to any additional contract, I meant that I was considering the unlocked international phone primarily for that reason. :D

In regards to the update provider, what would the U.S. equivalent be and/or who controls when the updates are pushed OTA? Or in other words, what would my CSC be, and how does that dictate which updates I'm entitled to? Basically I'm just ensuring ahead of time that my pseudo-AT&Tized GNote is able to get Samsung-sponsored Android updates without having to go through the trouble of modding it!

I put the apn settings in and it worked, it says 4g on the top but I can't send or receive mms. How can I fix that?

I have an international gnote and use it on AT&T. Basically it doesn't matter what carrier you are using, it matters what csc the note is. You should get ota updates directly from Samsung no matter if you are using AT&T or not.
