Hello all,

I purchased my samsung galaxy s2 two and a half years ago. It came loaded with android 2.x.x or 3.x.x (can't really remember) and everything worked just fine.
A while ago i performed a firmware upgrade, via samsung kies, to android 4 (ice cream sandwich). Since the update i have been experiencing a problem - i cannot download new app updates or new apps that are larger than a few (~4) MB. When trying to download a new app i get an "application cannot be installed in the default install location" notification, and trying to update i get "insufficient storage available".

I recently updated to android 4.1.2 (jelly bean), but the problem was not solved. Furthermore, i now get a "storage space running low" notification, and my phone does not sync with apps (gmail, for instance).

When checking storage space, i see that i have 1.79/1.97GB used in the system storage category and 2.12/11.5GB used in the USB storage category. I do not have an SD card.

How can I use the USB storage for photos, videos and apps instead of the system storage, and will it solve the problem?

Thanks a lot

You may have to factory-reset the device, since software updates tend to leave parts from previous firmware behind. You may also want to clear up some of the USB storage to avoid any future issues regarding memory space.

By the way, how does the 12GB partition of your phone show up as USB storage? When I received the JB update via Kies, it shows up as another part of Internal Storage alongside the 1.97GB Internal Storage partition. (I'm using ParanoidAndroid 2.55 right now, so that may have messed with it, but this popped up with the official update for Stock TouchWiz beforehand.)

I don't know why it is shown as a seperate storage, it simply does for some reason. And that is what was so weird, to have 11.5GB of practicaly unusable internal memory..
Anyway, I will try a factory reset and update here if it works, for people who encounter the same issue.

Thank you both a lot!! :)

Technically, USB Storage is only reserved for app data and media content, downloads, etc. You may have to delete some apps, especially those using large amounts of memory. Also, the phone's device memory and USB Storage are the default storage partitions used.

If the problem persists through a factory reset, try formatting the USB Storage partition. Otherwise, the software may be the problem. Check the amount of memory left through a PC first.
