Hello guys,

I have an issue with a Galaxy S2 Tablet. I tried to google a bit and I tried a few things I found there but I haven't had any luck. Basically the screen goes off and on randomly. There is no ability to clearly see the screen because most of the time it is black. I found a method of getting in to the system recovery menu but that does not seem to work since the device barely displays any picture. I was able to find a battery tip online where I remove the battery and plug it back in and it is suppose to fix the issue but that didn't work.

The device is a Galaxy S2 Tablet SM T800 UD.

I was thinking to a certain extent that I would be needing a new LCD and Digitizer but I wanted to check on here first.

If needed I could try to record the device doing this and post it up for review.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to Android Central! You don't have Smart Stay on, do you?

Do you have a case on? Anything that might have an embedded magnet that is inadvertently triggering the smartcover sensor?

No cover nothing really.. It seems to flash the display and then you might see lines occasionally and then it goes back to completely black... I was told it did this after a software update. My thinking was that the LCD and Digitizer went out on it.

It sounds like a hardware defect. Is it still under warranty?

No, the warranty expired August 31st, 2015. When I think about it, the LCD and Digitizer might be fine. When it flickers on they both seem to be normal. At least they don't look like a few of the Iphones that I have broke the screens on.

It might be a loose connection somewhere. If you're handy, you could try opening it up and checking the connections. There are probably some teardown videos on YouTube you could use as a guide.

Yea I already took it apart a bit. I did a battery thing I saw where I remove the battery and plug it back in and restart the device but the issue did not go away. One thing that I did remember was when you plug it into charge I do believe the screen displays the charge icon without issue and it stays there correctly like it should under normal conditions.

That video sure looks like a hardware defect. The last thing I can suggest is to boot into Safe Mode, just in case a 3rd party app is causing the problem. https://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-23632

I will attempt that. Samsung gave me instructions on turning it on via diagnostics mode but I was not successful. I think more so because I couldn't see the screen long enough to be able to do anything with it.

My only problem right now is that I do not know if the device is indeed on or off.

You can force a shutdown by pressing and holding Power and Vol Down for about 15-20 seconds.

I do understand warranty why companies use them so strictly but if a device is not abused, submerged or obviously neglected, every once in a long while a conglomerate like Samsung could take a device in for a look at minimal ship and service cost. Minimal cost. Just to see what the issue is. There is no problem Bono service being asked for but right away you get hit above the $200 mark with these companies.
They can't even get an update out to the masses without making it seems I Ike the complexities of a shuttle launch are involved.

I went ahead and gave that a shot. I did the Power and Volume Down combo to try to turn it off. I am not sure if it turned it off but it did fix the issue I was having... The screen is back to normal and I am able to control and work the device like normal it seems... Thanks a bunch B. Diddy

After playing with it some more it seems like after I do that and let it sit for a few mins maybe about 10 mins or so, the problem comes back and the screen starts doing the same thing again. Any thoughts on this?

I played with it a little bit. Once I got it into Safe Mode it seems to work pretty well but it did start doing the same thing again. I did a wipe/restore and just left it at the initial setup screen for a few mins and it started doing the same thing again. I was thinking of replacing the battery at this point. Thoughts on this?

If that's happening in Safe Mode, then I think the problem is with the hardware. I don't think you have any other options besides bringing it in for repair. Sorry!
