Galaxy S3 auto-restart problem

I purchesed my S3 over a year ago and lately I'm having some problems with it.
A month ago it began to auto-restart, about twice a day, and after a week of doing that it went into a boot cycle - turned itself on and when it got to the samsung logo phase it restarted again.

A friend of mine help my to recover the phone and was able to get the software up so I could use the phone, at that point I factoy reseted it hoping that this problem would go away.
A day later it started to auto-restart again and i'm afraid it will go into a boot cycle again.

Someone told me that the best and only thing to do is to root it and change the device ROM, a thing i have never done to my phone.

What do you think is the problem? and how can I get rid of it??

it has happened to me as well several times, but it doesn't get stucked on the loop, when it starts to happen i just pull the battery out for at least a minute then i pull it back and turn the the phone normally, but i do think that a really annoying problem that just happens out of the blur.

You can try clearing the system cache in Recovery mode (with the phone completely off, press and hold the Volume Up and Home and Power buttons simultaneously, and release them all when you see the Samsung splash screen. When the Recovery menu appears use the Volume rockers to navigate through the items and the Power button to select an item).

Unless there's some other reason that you really want to root your phone or load different ROMs, I'd suggest just reloading the stock firmware. Here's an overview of what to do:
- if you don't already have the Kies software installed on your PC, download it (just search Google) and install it. The first time it runs it'll update itself to the latest version so make sure you run it once before proceeding.
- put your phone in Download mode: with the phone completely off, press and hold the Volume Down and Home and Power buttons simultaneously, and release them all when you see the Samsung splash screen
- connect the phone to your PC with the USB cable that came with the phone
-- if you've never had the phone connected to your Windows-based computer before, you'll see messages about installing drivers, etc - just wait until this is done (may take 5 or 10 minutes) [I don't know what happens if you have a Mac - it probably just works]
- in the Kies software, select the second item in the Tools menu and just follow the prompts to enter the model number (in CAPS) and IMEI/Serial Number (both found under the battery - it's ok to remove the battery at this point)
- the Kies software should start downloading the correct firmware for your phone from the Internet; once that's done (depending on your Internet connection speed) it'll begin downloading that to the phone (this probably takes 10 minutes or so)

I just ran into this problem yesterday w/ my S3 (T999).

First it started w/ intermittent restarts throughout the day.

Battery pull - no fix
deleted chrome & FB - no fix
Wipe cache on recovery screen - no fix.

Then later that day it went into power on/off repeatedly w/o fully booting up. Remove battery, soon as the battery was re-installed it would attempt to power itself up. After several attempts it finally loaded. Once It loaded I powered off correctly, wiped cache on next power up. I then went into
Settings>application manager>all>touchwiz home>clear data.

After I cleared the data I powered down properly, wiped cache again and on power up everything seems fine now. Wiping the data on touchwiz deleted all the apps & I widgets on my screens. It looked like an out of box S3 w/ my background wallpaper. So I set my phone up like I had it before and it's been running normal so far today knock on wood. Hopefully this works, next stop rooting.

UPDATE*** Phone began doing the same thing again, finally it will not even fully turn on making it a paperweight. I did some digging and had my phone completly torn apart last night and I belive a faulty power switch is the issue. I placed an order for 3 new switches from eBay for $10 shipped US seller. I'm fully believing it's a hardware issue now, not software.

I'm writing this with my gs3, which would have been impossible before. I finally found the fix for the random rebooting. The solution that worked for me was to root and install cyanogenmod, then I installed an app called 'trickster mod'. Then I set the CPU frequency to run at minimum 800. Thats it. If your phone runs fine whilst playing games like CSR Racing then this is propably the fix for you to. I'm not sure you have to run Cyanogenmod, but you need root. The downside to this fix is that the battery gets drained a bit faster, still good thou.

How do you set the CPU frequency to run at minimum 800? Becuase I got the app and in the general tab where CPU frequency is it says the minimum is 20,000.

Try this

* Turn off Auto Sync
* Uninstall GMail update
-> Setting -> Apps -> Downloaded -> GMail -> Uninstall update.

I had the autorestart problem but after doing this, it is resolved now.

My father was facing the exact issue, it wasn't a hardware issue. I rooted his phone and flashed Cyanogenmod through a custom recovery without setting the CPU frequency to run at 800 and it all worked fine.

I am having an auto-restart problem as well. I thought I had tracked it down to Gmail, but reverting to a previous version didn't help. I now believe that the problem stems from the way KitKat 4.4.2 has apparently suddenly changed the way it allows (or dis-allows, or limits) application access to the external SD-card.

I have my ringtones (certain phone numbers, messaging and email) stored in a non-standard location on the external SD-card. I'm pretty sure that what is happening is that the app looks for the ringtone where it was told to previously, but 4.4.2 screams "HEY, you're not allowed there!" and things deteriorate from there. I'm in the process of revising my ringtones, but I don't know of a way to list what contacts use non-standard ringtones.

This change was poorly handled IMHO.

Any more updates here? I think JustinUdderUID might be on to something here. I've been on CM for a while and at some point months ago began to have the reboot issue. I cannot pinpoint the cause but I suspect its related to how much free space is on the internal storage of the phone. For example when I cleared the hundreds of photos from the phone, the reboot issue got much better. If I install a bunch of apps, the issue tends to get worse (more frequent) or at least occur shortly after the installation...

My galaxy 3 verizon spontaneously restarts ONLY when i am roaming internationally. Last year in Belize, this year in Costa Rica. NEVER at home anywhere in U.S. Explanations anyone?
