Ok guys this is my dilemma, i cannot decide which to buy i mean after jelly bean came out the performance on the galaxy nexus seems about equal? My question is it worth it to get the galaxy nexus or the galaxy s3 what are the benefits of each other, i would like to hear your opinion.

Hardware wise the S3 has a better, low light camera. I really dont think the dual core v quad core is going to make much difference in the real world. I think if the camera makes a difference to you, then the S3 might be the answer, but if getting JB quickly is a priority, then get the nexus. Rumors are that the S3 wont see JB until very late in the year or early next year. But, you know how those things go.

Ive spent the day researching the same question. My son has the GNex, I am leaning towards the S3. This was a good comparison of the two: Samsung Galaxy S3 vs. Galaxy Nexus: Is it time to upgrade? | ExtremeTech

Galaxy Nexus. and here's why:

-Jelly Bean has closed the gap as far as performance is concerned. It takes a phone that is almost a year old and puts it right in the mix again. I've got both right next to each other right now and I honestly think the Nexus is faster when it comes to scrolling through the UI. Probably helps that it doesn't have a launcher on top of it.

-Google Voice Search and Google Now are cooler than anything that's offered on the S3. S Voice can't compete with Google Voice Search whatsoever. I find myself using it all the time now and it directly ties into Google Now. What is normally just a gimmick on the iPhone and the S3 is extremely usable and useful on the Nexus.

-The notification shade is just awesome. They've taken things to another level here. Again, another useful thing you just can't get on the S3.

-It's stock Android. Beautifully designed UI that was so awesome before, but is even better now because of how responsive it is.

-The Jelly Bean keyboard is better than SwiftKey. It's on-par with the iPhone now.

-I think you're on T-Mobile, so you could order the unlocked Nexus that won't be restricted for updates by your carrier. Probably the biggest advantage the Nexus has over any other Android phone.

-It's still the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, which was a great phone from the start. It's subjective, but I like the build quality of the Nexus better than the S3.

For me, it was a no-brainer. I ordered the Nexus from Google only 4 days after I got the S3. The S3 does have a slightly better screen, more RAM, a faster CPU/GPU, and a better camera. The RAM and CPU/GPU advantage are hardly noticable when the Nexus is running Jelly Bean. The camera is still superior, but I kind of like the Nexus camera app better. Either way you go, you're going to have a great phone. If you have to choose, though, go with the Nexus.

I'm kind of in the same boat as the OP. Software wise it's a no-brainer: Nexus all the way. But on the hardware side the S3 is better in literally every possible way. (and in some cases significantly better) Heck, the Galaxy S2 is a better spec'd phone than the nexus.

Still, the fact that so many like us are debating this really says something about how much better the stock Google experience is than getting painted into a corner by Touchwiz or other lousy skins.

Oh, one question I do have though: the GSM Nexus is pentaband right? (so it could be used easily on Tmobile) However, does it support HSPA 42? I'm assuming no, which is a real shame if you're a Tmobile customer considering grabbing this phone.

S3. More ram, more storage, and a much much better efficient processor and battery life. Better camera too.

I'd be surprised I'd they didn't get 4.1 ported over.

Personally I am hoping to wait until the new nexus devices are at least announced though, want to see if they're worth the wait before I upgrade or not.

Once I experienced stock I found it hard to use anything else. And jelly bean is unbelievable. You really dont need anything on top of that, and lastly, what a pleasure it is to get updates directly and immediately from goog without having to wait for some schmuck at verizon et al to give the green light

It's pretty simple: if you are signing a contact extension, then S3; if not, Gnex. At least that way, you can wait to use your upgrade on a new 2012 version of the Gnex, if one were to come out in October or November.

Very helpful i already made the order for the nexus 7 and the galaxy Nexus, having the family will be interesting, fast updates :).

Yeah it is harder to get it port over the US versions , they ported it to the international versions with really nothing workng. So very alpha, voice search sadly only JB cannot be transferred like a simple apk, and doesnt work on ICS. The ram is always good, but aince the UI is kind of heavy thats why it needs it, s voice doesnt work 90% of the time, the more storage is important, but right now have 75gb on my dropbox and 50gb on box. The processor wont make a difference since they both can run, and now since the OS is optimized you wont see lag, and we wont need higher cores to receive the same performance, battery life on the nexus is pretty good, the camera i heard and read is better, software can improve camera quality surprisingly.

I don't believe the US version of the S3 has a quad core processor. It has a 1.5 GHz Dual-Core processor. So the difference is even smaller.

The snapdragon s4 is substantially more powerful than the OMAP 4460 despite it only being a dual core... Though I would probably rather have a slower processor and jelly bean than touchwiz...

The real benefit to the snapdragon, in my opinion, is superior LTE battery life.

Well im coming from tmobile which is hspa+ 42 but i dont have that on my area anyhow, now the substantially faster on S4 on ICS i understand but jelly bean wont be coming to that until probably next year june or so just like the S2 got ICS, while a price point of 350 is incredibly cheap, and proven to have similar or better performance, from what they showed in IO, touchwiz which is kind of bad because everything is hidden in menus, the notifications on jelly bean look amazing, the google now is pretty cool and faster than anything out there which makes it more efficient.

Don't forget about the GPU. If gaming is important, then the S4's Adreno GPU will be quite a bit better than the PowerVR in the Gnexus.

true, on my Skyrocket NOVA 3 and Mass Effect Infiltrator perform much better than on GN

Im sorrybut i cannot see myself playing on my phone really high graphical games, not even shadowgun which i got i mabe play it once or twice on my nexus 7 but for gaming i leave i to gaming consoles or pc. All i will be doing mostly is brwose the web, so browser is very important, video playback which im sure both do excellent, and screen of course HD and performance opening apps and using tools like google now and the new notifications sound like a plus.

I went into Sprint yesterday and had every intention on NOT walking out with a phone. If anything, I was going to get a GN off eBay sometime later this month. However, after seeing the S3 on display next to the GN, I just couldn't bring myself to get the GN. I will likely feel some sort of way about having to wait for an official release of JB for my S3, but this thing has amazing hardware. And the screen definitely looked better next to the GN. I think I will wait for the next line of Nexus devices to drop for the pure experience.

The S3 (and S2 also) is 42.

The GNex is 21.

Theoretical of course.

I have the S3 right now but the back cover is a big turn off, glossy easy to get scratches and gets fingerprints on it all the time, the nexus seem to have better build quality, the screen might not be as amazing, i mean if you load up the same wallpapers i think it will be since the nexus has 316 PPI and the S3 has 306 PPI colors are very similar HD S Amoled display. the technology hasnt change on the display so I would asume they are the same if set to same brightness and same wallpapers. performance is key too, of course hardware the S III is better, but software with jellybean makes it negligible, since fixes lag on the nexus overall, and that makes it same performance without the need of much more power from hardware.
