I plugged in my phone to charge overnight (as usual) and about an hour into the charging I noticed the phone got extremely hot. Not the cord, or the plug... just the phone. I unplugged it and went back to sleep. In the morning it wouldnt turn on (in fact it still isnt turning on) I tried the up+power+home button but the samsung logo comes on then it powers off. I have it plugged it but it wont even confirm its charging. I havent had any issues with my charger.

Is my phone a goner? :'(

I never put my phone on charging for overnight. What if I give you food though you don't want to eat?
overnight charging can degrade battery performance too.
You should take it to service center.

Most chargers made now are smart enough to stop charging when the battery is at capacity. Overall, you are correct though, putting it on charge over can degrade the performance if it continually supplies power to the phone.

Take the battery out of the phone and let it sit for 10 minutes. Put the battery back in and see if it boots. Depending on how old the phone is, and your usage and care of the battery, it could be a bad battery if it the phone is getting hot.

I am having the same problem.

My battery was almost drained (around 5% left) and put the phone to charge and went to sleep.

I woke up after a couple of hours and both the phone and the charger were very hot. It was the first time that I felt my phone overheated. I tried turning it on, but nothing. The phone seemed dead. I thought that it was better if I left it for a few minutes to cool down and then try again. But still the phone does not boot.
I also tried twice to connect the phone to my laptop through the USB cable and I see that the phone starts getting hot around the "charging" area...And won't boot of course.

Any thoughts, anybody knows what may be happening?

PS. I tried all the combinations "vol up + power + home", etc. but nothing seems to be working.

That's not a good sign. Have you tried a different cable? It's possible that something got shorted out in the cable, causing both the phone and charger to overheat.

It may be that something happened to the micro-USB port on the phone which is causing the issue. If using a different cable doesn't make a difference then you should look at either getting the micro-USB port replaced or switching to a wireless charging solution (which bypasses the micro-USB port).

I had the same issue on my old LG Optimus, I tried the charger and it would heat up at charging port so I took it apart and found out it shorted out a chip on the board, the chip was bloated and when I put it on the charger it would heat up to the point that I couldn't touch it and the micro USB port so I sent it in with the charger and they said it was the charger had shorted out the wire that controls the current, and that caused my phone to blow out that battery chip and charging port!! I hope this helps!!

I was using a Power Case with my Samsung Galaxy Note 3. The first time I elected to use the case to re-charge the phone, I noticed that the Power case got quite hot! The phone is OK after charging on own as is the Power Case! Any ideas! The USB adaptor for the S3 gives output 5v at 2.0A, the S3 Battery is 3.8V 12.16wh and the Power Case output is 5v 0.8A. Am I missing something?

Don't use the Power Case anymore?

I don't see anything wrong with the stats that you listed, but if that thing is getting hot while you're using it to charge, it's probably cooking the phone as well.
