Galaxy S4: Android OS Battery Drain

Re: Android OS Battery Drain

Since this is the #1 hit on Google for Android OS Battery Drain, thought I'd share the solution I found elsewhere. Very simple, just disable Auto Backup (of photos) in Google+.

After sitting in my pocket with basically no use for 8 hours now my phone battery is at 93% instead of 65%, and Android OS is second in battery use to "Phone Idle" instead of being first by a large margin.

I'm gonna give this a try. After all these days trying a bunch of different things, rooting my phone, using wakelock detector, deleting apps that ran on the background, still Android OS is the one that is on top draining the battery. My battery one day lasted 1d 12h without charging! That proved to me that the battery has the ability to last a very long time, it's just that some apps drain way too much battery too fast.

Lately, with 4.3, my battery life lasts around 12 hours (very little difference between very little use and a lot of use, even idle)

Re: Android OS Battery Drain

Thanks for the app, I will soon give it a shot.
I have had this problem for some time on a Samsung S4 (I am aware of it since I have Cyanogenmod 10.2, probably it was present also with stock OS since battery times are not very different).

In my case, (manually) switching wifi on/off does not seem to improve the situation, as the wakelock remains in place; only reboot works, and the issue reappears after about 3 hours. Is your application doing anything else besides switching Wifi on/off? Or is it doing it in a different way than through the interface?

One curious note is that I do not have this problem when I visit my family abroad, even if I have wifi on all the time. It seems somehow that this issue has external causes. I tried deactivating the 5 GHz to replicate the conditions at my family's place, band but the issue reappeared anyway.

Re: Android OS Battery Drain

Im also having the same problem.. please help. Has anyone solved this? Thanks

Re: Android OS Battery Drain

I was having issues as well and narrowed it down to two things. I was seeing AndroidOS using about 47% of the battery and Google Play Services taking about 23%.

1. AndroidOS Fix: Go to Google Settings...Google+. Under general settings go into Auto Backup (of images to Google+) TURN THIS OFF!!! Even though I hardly every take pics, it was still sucking the life out of my battery. After turning this off and recharging, AndroidOS is now using about 7% battery.

2. Google Play Services Fix: Go to Settings...Locations Services. TURN OFF "Use Wireless Networks". I use to have that off, but a recent update must have turn GPS off and turned that on. After turning that off and turning GPS back on Google Play Services is only using 2% battery.

I couldn't get through an 8 hour work day the past couple weeks. I now have GPS & Bluetooth (with a fitbit connected) enabled and my battery is lasting over 24 hours!

Hope this helps!!!

Matt

My only issue is, I don't have a Google+ account..
I went into Settings, and under accounts I chose Google. In there I found something similar and disabled the Google+ photo backup that had a check next to it.

This morning I woke up, unplugged my phone from full charge, and about 7 minutes later it is already down to 86%...
I've barely gotten up for the day!.. I should mention that the battery said it was 70% due to Android OS.
I'll give it a bit longer and see how it does.

Reboot the device to clear out any remaining issues the see if you have any improvements.

Re: Android OS Battery Drain

No improvements thus far after turning off the Google + photo sync.
If I use my phone, I can actually watch my battery level drop.
In fact, I have also noticed that once my phone hits 10%,it shuts off where as I used to actually be able to push it to 1%.

Today, after very minimal use, it was at 14% as I was on my way home, that lasted about 3 minutes before my phone shut off and I could no longer use it.

Re: Android OS Battery Drain

Not sure if you have resolved your issue yet here's a few things you can try and download to improve your battery. Turn off your airview functions, smart screen functions, and motions and gestures functions they're cool to have but most people don't even use them cause they drain battery and they are inconsistent. As far as apps goes get a hold of battery guru and Dr. Battery I find both apps help improve battery dramatically. With Dr battery you will need to play with the option to see a huge improvement. Battery guru runs in the background it tries to figure out how you use your phone and work to understand your usage and gradually reduce the battery usage for you.

My friend had the same problem as you when i recommended the 2 he saw a huge performance difference.

I charged my Galaxy S4 last night up to 100%. Exactly 10 hours and 5 minutes later my battery is at 40%.

If you can't see the picture, here's the apps that drain my batery:

Android OS - 72%
gpsd - 16% (I have GPS turned off, so I don't know what this is here)
Screen - 4%

As you can see, Screen being at 4%, I haven't used my phone at all, because I've been sleeping during the entire 10 hours ( I charged my phone and went to sleep). Basically, Android OS is draining almost all the battery by itself (72%, it's not even funny.

Can anybody help me?

Re: Android OS Battery Drain

So I figured I would give it a week or so to "test" how the changes went after I turned off the auto sync for Google+ and turning off "Use wireless networks" in my Location Service settings.

My battery life definitely improved and "Android OS" now only uses between 10-25% of my battery depending on the day.

I tried turning the Location Service settings for using wireless networks back on because I really like the location based cards that Google Now gave me. This made my battery life plummet like no other. I charged my phone after about 5 to 6 hours since it had been off the charger, with minimal use, because the battery life dropped to 10%. I charged it to 41% and then took it off and made a phone call. Almost exactly 20 minutes later my phone died in the middle of the phone call and I could no longer use it until I made it back to a charger.

I haven't changed the apps I used to use, but now I am actually missing out on more features that I used to have before the most recent update.
At least I'm assuming it is the most recent update to 4.3, otherwise it's just an odd coincidence that shortly after receiving the update, my battery decided to start dying...

Re: Android OS Battery Drain

Hi all.

Until January 2014, my Note 3 could easily last two days with 30% battery left at the end of the second day.

Then ... only one short day. If I stop/restart my Note 3, it lasts again 2 days, but once. I have to stop/restart it every two days.
I decided to install Wakelock detector, and here is the results :

Screenshots taken at 8:40 and 10;53 am today.

Any idea ?

FYI, I tried everything ... factory reset, disable location ... and so on.

Re: Android OS Battery Drain

I first noticed something was wrong with my Note 3 when I went to the gym and just completely lost my data signal. I always check in every morning when I go but now I was seeing an Edge network or no signal symbol where the 4GLTE used to be. Now I know nothing has changed in the gym because my girlfriend still has a perfect signal. This has also happened at my workplace. I work in the basement and have always had at least a 4G signal. Now nothing.

Also during these past few days all of a sudden my phone also is draining battery at an alarming rate. I went to bed last night on a 100% charge and went to sleep I woke at 5am and I was down to 38% I used battery usage and it shows Android os at 64% but the phone was asleep. I never used it. I now unplugged the phone this morning at 100% took a quick shower and I'm down to 93 already. I have even turned off some things that I never had to before. I have been in love with this phone since the day i got it but this trouble is really breaking my heart. Any help out there!

Re: Android OS Battery Drain

I'm seen the same thing happen to my ATT Note3 for the past few days, at least since Monday which was before the most recent update ATT pushed out. I've tried several things even putting the phone in airplane more and disabling all location settings and still 'Android OS' consumes the majority of battery. 2.5-3% an hour doing nothing. This would mean I couldn't get more then 40 hours just idling. While this might seem like a lot I have been able to get 3 to 4 hours of screen time in 40 hours in the past. If I have 3 to 4 hours screen time now I would probably be lucky to get 8 to 10 hours.

Re: Android OS Battery Drain

Mine started Monday as well. I did a factory reset last evening. It fixed the battery drain. I went to sleep with 100% and woke with 96%. Now the main problem I'm still having is the signal loss in the gym and my job. Actually I found out its pretty much any walled up room. My signal drops or disappears completely. Went to ATT today and was sent to another store that will replace my phone. I'm going tonight after work and I'll keep you guys posted.

Re: Android OS Battery Drain

Hi all..i just started facing the same problem. Using a S4 i9500.
Android OS is at 68%
wifi not sleeping even after selecting 'never' in sleep policy
Found Viber was over writing sleep policy so changed that to follow phones sleep policy
No sync, no location services, Google+ sync and play is off as well.
Using 'Better battery stats' I did notice then that Exchange server was keeping my phone active for long duration. Just deleted that account for now to see how it goes.
Any suggestions and solutions not covered, please let me know.

Re: Android OS Battery Drain

Frist of all check if your app is running in background or not it an app is running on background then " FROCE CLOSE " that app frist.. And another way is to not charging your android device through out night unplug your charger as soon as in indicates full battery line i.e 100%..Another way is to turn all your auto sync off. And lower your brightness as possible as you can see don't make your screen go brighter it sucks up your battery power.

At last another way is to replace your samsung galaxy S4 battery .... ( but if you replace your battery make sure you don't charge your battery all night. Unplug your charger as soon as it indicates 100 % charge..
i gess these tips will help you to solve your battery drain problem... :)

Re: Android OS Battery Drain

The update you did was not official ... if you had done an official OS update provided from samsung and battery drain problem is still not detected in any updates... i am aslo using galaxy S4 and i have successfully updated to android 4.3 and it is pure official..

Just updated my s4 to kitkat. Previously had android os working over time which reduced battery life to a mere 7 to 10 hrs... After kitkat.. Phone has become super smooth.. Battery life has increased considerably..Lasts 1day and a few hrs on average and all problems have disappeared..very happy with the update.
