Galaxy S4 - Which waterproof case? Obex or Lifeproof?

I have used the lifeproof fre and it was ok but the part where the charging port door broke. Thinking about the incipio atlas does anyone have one or have any opinions on it.

Hello and welcome to the forums.

The frē is the one my brother uses, he also broke the charging port door and the headphones port door.

Re: Galaxy S4 Lifeproof case doesn't work

Nope, they still haven't improved the case. I bought one and had to return it do to the sound quality. I really wanted it to work. love the look and feel of it. I know it's a known issue for waterproof cases, but for what they charge, it shouldn't have any issues.

Re: Galaxy S4 Lifeproof case doesn't work

My husband and I ordered 2 lifeproof fre cases for our galaxy s4. We got them the first week the cases came out. Loved the case but you couldn't hear the person on the cell using the case. It happened with both cases on both phones. The gasket at the microphone (which is a very small hole) muffles the person's voice. We returned the cases and Lifeproof sent two more....same thing. So we informed the company that it must be a defect and something has to change for it to be usable for the galaxy s4. I think we were the first to receive and complain about them. So we bought different cases for now and hopefully the company will figure out something to fix the case.

Weird, my brother doesn't have any sound issues with his. 😐

IMO don't get the Lifeproof Nuud, does not work for Samsung Galaxy S4, needs a redesign.

Love this case, it is well built and protective, however it is not functional as a phone case.

I can also testify to the sound issues this case causes. Callers voices are muffled at best and very hard to hear clearly. Most times callers are unable to hear a single word I am saying and if they are lucky enough to hear anything the sound quality of my voice is terrible and muffled also. Some callers get an echo effect of their own voice back through the phone which can be very distracting. This case protects the phone well but makes it unusable as a phone.

I wrecked my first S4 by using it at the gym by getting some sweat on it so I needed a waterproof case. Bought this case and have been frustrated ever since by it's lack of functionality. Like I said earlier I love the protection provided but can't make or take a phone call with it on. Called Lifeproof and got the same run around, blow in the case solution to free the diaphragm, simply doesn't work. I then took the first case back and got it exchanged as they said there may be a defect with the case, replacement case has the same problem.

Like the protection provided so I have still been using the case and have resorted to ripping my phone out of the case whenever I receive or make a phone call, very frustrating and annoying for a $90 case, should work as expected. Wish I was one of the few posters who could report no sound issues. Finally had enough and I am moving on, going to try the OBEX case out and hope for better sound quality, although the protection looks more compromised when using the headphone jack. Will post results once I receive it in the mail. May even try the Dog and Bone wetsuit case although it appears to be only available in Australia.

So to sum it up, good case for protection if you don't use your phone as a phone, but if you need to make and take phone calls save your money and don't buy the Lifeproof Nuud. Lifeproof Nuud = garbage.

Since I switched from IPhone 4S to S4, I have had 3 lifeproof nuud cases replaced. Each time the charge port door broke every 2 months. I gave up and bought the Obex.

I like the design of the Obex for the S4. It has much better access to the screen than the Lifeproof as mentioned in an earlier post.

Phone call quality good on both ends except I have had speaker phone echo issues mentioned in earlier posts.

I am also having a problem with the headphone adapter. It doesn't seem to securely latch in to the port and cones out often.

3/20/2015: Still love the Obex. I did notice some water leaked into the case today. After removing my phone, I did a water test and there were lots of bubbles coming from the Home button. I am surprised as I predicted that the "living hinge" on the charge port cover would break first. Fortunately, and I am still under warranty. I am not upset since the case has served me well until today, and I am a good guinea pig for testing durability.

I have the lifeproof fre and as for waterproof and dropping it works great but sound quality is horrible!!! am just curious for the obex people do you have a problem talking to people. with the lifeproof im told I sound like im in a tunnel and all muffled and when people talk to me they can hear them self echoing through the phone.

In my experience, my son had the Lifeproof case for his Galaxy S4 and it was nearly impossible to hear/understand him. He bought a Lifeproof for his S5 & he says it is supposed to be better, but same problem. He now uses a bluetooth headset and that clears it up completely - but he has to wear a bluetooth headset!

When I got a Galaxy S4 and he told me the new Lifeproof cases were now working great for that model. So I did 4 tests with the plain S4 and then with the S4 in the Lifeproof case. Test 1: called my home answering machine, listened to the greeting and left a test message. Test 2: Listened to a music MP3. Test 3: Made a voice recording. Test 4: took an outside picture. I then did the exact same 4 tests with the S4 in the Lifeproof case (Fre). The results I had were: Test 1: answering machine greeting sounded good but the test message I left was very diminished in volume. Test 2: music MP3 sounded good. Test 3: voice recording was terrible! Very, very low volume - could hardly hear it. Test 4: picture was no different than the plain phone. Initially the phone while inside the Lifeproof case could not pickup voice search or S Voice input. After reading some troubleshooting blogs, I blew into the microphone port as if blowing out a candle and it helped. I was very disappointed in the overall performance.

Being unsatisfied with the call quality and voice recording, voice search and S Voice app failures, I purchased an OBEX case. I performed the same 4 tests with the following results: Test 1: better earpiece sound quality and the voice message quality was barely if any different than the S4 not in any case. Test 2: music MP3 sounded better. Test 3: voice recording was barely if any different than the S4 not in any case. Test 4: picture quality was the same as the S4 not in any case.

For me, the OBEX case was hands down better in call quality/clarity, earpiece sound and voice operations. And it came with a belt clip holster.

I have a nuud lifeproof case and I'm on my 3rd case and the keep breaking. The headphone jack cover come off or the charging port door breaks.
