You don't get that delay when hitting the button and then another delay when selecting an app? Not talking a small delay, but maybe 1/2-1 second?
I don't, no. The task manager loads instantly and I can switch to any app without much of a delay. I say "much" because there is some delay when the app is opening but that's due to the zoom animation being used. It's just a "delay" of watching the animation.
Bull_hit. Then they need to put it on a diet. My iPhone 4S loaded the camera faster than the GS5. And that was a phone with much less CPU, much less RAM, etc. Other Androids load the camera faster. It's been a constant complaint with the GS5.
Samsung's camera app is also 500X more complex than the camera app your iPhone 4S was running. It's also more complex than many other camera apps. It's the only one that can shoot HDR pictures, anti-motion blur pictures, record video at 4K, record video in super slow motion, record video using the other settings, and shoot photos using all settings. Most 3rd party camera apps are limited to HDR mode and 1080p 30fps video recording. Samsung's app takes all of 2 seconds to get up and running on my S5, the same amount of time it takes for Google's camera app to open so that it's ready to start shooting.
Samsung is damned if they do, damned if they don't. They can take away features from their camera app so that it loads 1 second faster but then people will start complaining about how basic it is. It may not be the fastest camera out there but it loads just as fast as my iPhone 5 did, it takes better shots than my iPhone 5, and it has a lot more features than my iPhone 5.
Coming from a phone with much less horsepower (iPhone 4s running iOS 8), much less RAM, etc and having a poorer experience on a Quad Core, 2.x Ghz, 2GB RAM monster means something is wrong. Be it the OS, the hardware, something is getting in the way.
Heck, I've got the first Retina iPad that feels snappier than the GS5!
But iOS is a lot simpler than Android. My S5 is also speedier than my iPhone 5 and iPad mini were. Like any Android smartphone, it all depends on the launcher. Switching to the Google launcher sped it up so that switching between app panels is instant, I can instantly load the full grid of installed apps and swipe into those, etc. I do admit that there was a delay when using TouchWiz with almost everything but switching to the Google launcher (some people prefer Nova, I didn't feel like going through all of the options) changed all of that.
My D300 is ready the instant the power button is flipped on. I'm not talking instant, but a 5 second delay in going from the camera swipe on the home screen to being able to take a picture is unacceptable in 2014/2015.
My Sony compact mirror-less camera takes 3-4 seconds to turn on from a cold boot, I highly doubt your D300 is ready the instant you turn it on from a cold boot. There has to at least be a 1-2 second delay, we aren't to the point where digital cameras (especially DSLRs) turn on instantly. However, I am not experiencing your 5 second delay when opening the Samsung camera app. A different launcher might do the trick freeing up some resources that TouchWiz would otherwise be hogging. Or you could have a bum S5, I don't know. Your experience is different than mine.
I've had the phone since the end of April. It's OK, nothing special at all. Be it the OS with it's shortcomings/idiosyncracies or the hardware I don't know. But I do hope Lollipop fixes a lot of these issues. If so, I'll be happy as there are a lot of neat things about Android (Google Now) but the unreliable nature (akin to Windows) stinks.
Windows has been pretty reliable ever since Windows 2000 so I'm not quite sure what you're talking about with that reference.
