Galaxy S5: rattle

Hello!

Anyone that got a rattling phone that rattles loudly when the vibrator is at medium or higher? It depends on the angle of my phone, but it is loud so it makes the vibrator not very useful. Here is a video of the problem:

I think a phones camera shouldn't rattle like this, and it is a design flaw escpecially in my case since it makes the vibrator so noisy. My previous phone a Lumia 800 did not, it also had focus mechanism, but not a very large camera compared to the S5. I'll return my phone to the store where I bought it and ask them. I too have noticed it has gotten worse since I bought it.

A rattle? No. It's a CLANK. And it's right next to my camera/fingerprint sensor!
Surely Samsung wouldn't pit the vibratory motor/mechanism by the camera?? I have a TON of issues with my S5, from the USB port cover not staying closed to camera issues and LAG LAG LAG...

This is an easy answer....do you have a rattle around your camera like the rest of us when you shake it?? Well, when the vibrator goes off, it also "slightly" rattles the loose "thing" or whatever it is that when we shake it, that clanks when you shake it.

Mine started rattling after about 10 days of ownership.

Turn on the camera it stops. Drives me nuts as it's quite loud and it just started today.
NONE of my prior Samsung phones had this rattle (Infuse, note, note 2, note 3, 2 s4's) so I might take it back to best buy just for grins.
My Nexus 5 did rattle but it was the power key.

It's obviously something to do with the S5's camera. Don't like it.

Update: trying clearing the camera app's cache and data, then factory reset. still the same problem so will take it in to BestBuy.
It really shouldn't rattle loudly lightly tapping the top half of the screen.
---
Update: returned it to BestBuy and the new phone has the same problem....outofthebox. oh well I will just deal with it...definitely NOT getting the HTC M8....like too many features of the S5 + better camera for my needs.
You guys do realize this is normal with the new high end lens companies are using along with the digital/optical stabilization right? Even the G2 has optical and it has a slight rattle. High end cameras have the same rattle, our DSLR does, it's normal. Don't you notice how the second you open the camera app the rattle goes away. Nothing is wrong, if it's normal on a $1k+ camera, it's normal on a phone lol. Older phones with old lens tech and no stabilization features whether digital or optical don't have that sound, is what it is.

Well then I still think it is an engineering flaw since the phone actually gets noisy when the vibrator is active. The vibrator is to alert only you and be silent to others, but in this case, at the right angle it makes the phone noisy. This also make the phone feel cheap and not as high end as its price, and I bet if this was Apples engineers Steven P. Jobs would make sure they fixed it before launhing the phone :-D

Anyway I took it back to my store yesterday, and the store service man and me found two other Galaxy S5 on display that rattled just like mine, and was noisy when the vibrator was active, and was quiet when the phone was in camera mode. We called Samsung and they said they just got to know about this problem, but since the other phones in the store had the same problem it was probably not much they could do.

I hope this is just a big batch that was lemon, and it is fixed in future revisons. I'm not rooted and still have warranty, I hoped they could fix it in the future and took my phone back with me home *yay*

You still don't get it, all the new phones have this rattle. I still have a iPhone 4S, 5, and 5S... guess what, have a similar rattle when you tap towards the top and it's known on the iPhones, google or check macrumors or others forums for yourself, and like all the other phones it stops the second you open the camera app, so there goes your Steve Jobs theory . Plus did you not see where I have a DSLR that has a similar rattle, it's common with high end lenses whether a camera like the DSLR or phone, even the G2 is optical and has a camera rattle. I guess everything has an engineering flaw since no company has figured it out

rolleyes huh sorry didn't mean to agitate you rick, my point still stands though, it greatly reduces the vibrator function, and the "accept it" before you know it can be remedied attitude you promotes doesn't help nyaaa. iPhone 4 had to too? damn I stand corrected.

But please contact Samsung customer support if you agree, more focus on this issue throught support can only help I guess.

Rick, my names not Rick lol? Just being sarcastic with the "Steve Jobs would never allow this", he/Apple obviously did as I have a 4S/5/5S to prove it and plenty of complaints online as well lol. I'm not sure what vibrate issue you keep mentioning as my phone vibrates fine whether a notification, or wakeup vibrate to let you know of a text etc, no rattle from that and haven't heard anyone else say that. But there's nothing that can be done for the lens rattle, all new phones have it and high end $$$$ cameras like my DSLR have it as well, it's normal. The second you use the camera and rattle isn't there. Some people think they should go Optical and that will work, well nope, the G2 is optical and has the same rattle and G3 will as well. When it's normal on cameras costing a north of a grand, it'll be normal as well on a cheaper phone.

I can confirm that the rattle is due to the camera lens... Try this... If you turn the camera on and then try shaking it the rattle will not be there anymore... Turn the camera off and it comes back.

Rick roll gettit :P Ok, do you have an S5? Turn the vibrator to max and hold the phone at different angles like in the video I posted, does it get noisy and rattling?

This happens to me too, and the other S5 phone I tried in the store so yup it definately is the camera.

Samsung Customer Support Center said:
If it makes noise on the S5 when you shake on it then this is normal! The reason for this is normally that there are lenses inside that need room to adjust the focus, when it is not running and you shake the can get some sound when the lenses can move due to too much space. It was hard to explain, but you could have gone to your dealer so that those could explained and shown to you.
I got this reply from Samsung support, they claim it is normal, but if it rattles loud with the vibrator active at certain angles (see my video) I thinks it is a flaw. Also maybe later phones won't have this is enough people nags about it, maybe some engineer gets a bright idea.

I have a rattle and contacted Samsung here is the chat.

Re: rattle

It's the camera I think. My company's IT guy and I were trying to figure it out and I think we did. It may be the lens/shutter or some part of the camera. Try turning on the camera then shaking the phone, it magically goes away. I'm debating whether to send it back as a manufacturing issue or if there's nothing that can be done/is "normal." Please try experimenting with what I stated above and let me know how it goes. Other than the rattling w/ the camera off, it's an awesome phone.

You are 100% right. thanks.
