Hi all,
Apologies if this is in the wrong place but I couldn't find a dedicated Tech Support area.

We have an S5 which suffered an accident and has no working screen or touch-screen capability. It charges, we can unlock it via OTG adapter & keyboard to enter the PIN and the notification / apps / back lights etc work.

When I unlock it and then plug it into the PC, Smart Switch tells me that USB File transfer is not allowed. I've figured if I can use the OTG keyboard to unlock it I can also tell it to allow USB Transfer as the message normally appeared on the screen as soon as you plugged it into the PC.

I bought a Micro USB / OTG splitter cable with the intention of having the Keyboard plugged into the phone and also the phone connected to the PC at the same time via the vacant female Micro USB port on the splitter cable. Seems my theory does not work as the PC does not recognise the phone when plugged in via the Micro USB connector on the splitter cable. In fact on both variants I've bought the Micro USB does not seem to work at all as it will not charge the phone when the charger is plugged directly into the Micro USB port either. I've tried the same setup on my S8 (with USB C adapters) with the same result.

Is this not how a splitter cable works or have I just had incredibly bad luck and ordered 2 duff cables?

It's not worth a new screen so just trying everything we can to get the old data off it before destroying it and getting on with things!

With many thanks in advance for any help that can be offered.
Thanks
Dave

Welcome to AC!
I think the problem is u can't see the box that says you trust this device when connected to a computer, if the screen is cheap enough and the data is that important give it a try

Hi and thank you!
You are correct that I cannot see the screen but I can connect a keyboard via the OTG cable and can sign into the phone using Enter / XXXX / Enter to get through the PIN even though I cannot see the screen.

I purchased a splitter cable in the hope that I could connect the keyboard (this works) and also connect the phone to the PC at the same time but plugging the cable from the PC into the Micro USB has no effect. If this worked then I could use the keyboard to allow USB transfer (press right & Enter) and the phone would then be unlocked and visible to the PC so I could copy all the files off it.

My problem is that the splitter cable does not work to allow the phone to be recognised by the PC (nor charge it as we have tried that as well) so my main question was whether Splitter cables work in the way I want it to or whether I am trying something that is impossible?

Thanks!
Dave
