Galaxy S5: Speaker loudness and quality

Re: Speaker loudness and quality

It's only when you play music on max volume. Not haptic vibration. The phone rocks, can't wait to get it. I only play music through the speaker when I'm not holding it so no worries there. I am going to go naked on this one, has a great feel to it.

I am planning to go naked with the S5 as well but I'm worried about the camera. It protrudes quite a bit and I would be scared to set the S5 down on its backside because of this. For this reason I think I'm going to end up with a case on my S5 just to protect the camera.

Re: Speaker loudness and quality

My S4 and Note 2, and 3 never rattled on max volume. So if the s5 really rattles to the level I think it does then that will be annoying. Guess I'll have to wait until release.

Re: Speaker loudness and quality

I wouldn't call it a rattle. It just vibrates a little be when it is on max volume. Definitely not a deal breaker. I have a two layer case on preorder and I'm sure it will help or muffle it out completely.

Re: Speaker loudness and quality

Has anyone done a compare between the M8 and the S5? I am leaning toward returning my HTC and waiting for the S5. The one thing that would stop me is if the S5 is a lot quieter than the M8. I listen to a lot of music and audiobooks on speaker - other than that, my wanting to switch is because of the removable battery, better camera and the split screen functionality. If no one has done a comparison, I may head over to the BestBuy tonight and pull up the same YouTube music video on both and hear it for myself. If that's the case, I'll report back and let you know my thoughts.

I guarantee you the M8 will sound much better than the S5. I used the M8 for a few days and absolutely love the speakers. I'm going to give the S5 a try and see which one I like better. I have the S4 now and always have to "cup" the speaker to hear it. Not in every instance where the sound is on but you get what I'm saying. Too bad the M8 speakers aren't on the S5!

Not to mention there is speculation Samsung is working on a "Prime" or "F" class device. This may have me rethink keeping the M8 and getting the "premium" device when released. Something to think about.

Re: Speaker loudness and quality

If I had the will power to wait, I would but I am coming off of a two year period of an iPhone 4S and am so done with it. I don't think I could stomach it for an undetermined amount of time waiting. I was never really pleased with my iPhone's speaker capabilities, which is why I am hesitant to give up the M8. I am totally going to do a comparison today at BestBuy between the S5 and my M8. Crossing my fingers that it's not a gigantic difference, but my gut tells me that nothing will compare to the front facing, dual speakers of the M8...

Re: Speaker loudness and quality

The sound on the S5 is not great. There's no two ways about it. The M8 sounds better and even my old S3 sounds better. But you have to ask yourself how often you're going to really need the speaker and then compare that against the benefits it has relative to the M8 and future vaporware. I think the sound is good enough for speaker phone use and I will use earphones for music, movies, and games, so the better screen (way better), fingerprint, and camera of the S5 wins it for me. I also don't care about metal backs and frankly don't love the visuals of the M8 (front or back) so it was easy for me.

But you have to place weights according to your matrix, not mine.

Re: Speaker loudness and quality

I don't think we should compare the loudspeaker quality of the HTC M8 compared to the S5. That's not even a comparison, anyone who believes S5 can compare in terms of quality and loudness to the boomsound speakers is either deaf or fanboy X 10000 lol. Just like last year, the HTC one's speakers was a league of their own. This year is no difference, since all the reviewers are already stating how much better the speakers are on the M8 compared to the M7.

Re: Speaker loudness and quality

Just returned from BestBuy and I can confirm that the quality of the M8 is by far better than the S5. I knew this would be the case but wanted to hear the difference for myself. I am struggling to make a decision between the 2 phones based on this. The stereo quality of the M8 is unreal compared to the S5. I was hoping that the S5 would be a little louder than it was. Any chance there is a setting with root that will boost the audio levels at all? I remember back in the day you could tweak settings to allow for that. Anyway, just wanted to let you guys know that there was a noticeable difference. This is all personal preference of course.

If you weren't aware, the S4 had a louder speaker than the M7 but the quality was inferior which was to be expected.

We will see what happens this year since the M8 posted a lower DB rating than the M7 from last year in GSMARENA's testing.

the M8 is so much louder then the M7 it's not even debatable...

Re: Speaker loudness and quality

The sound of the S5 is not even close. I suspect that it is due to IP67, not settings. If speaker sound level and quality is a primary requirement, the M8 wins. However, how much are you using speaker sound? In today's world, most people use headphones.

As long as the S5 is equal to or louder than the S4 I'll be happy. I have headphones when I want to listen to music and I also invested in a portable bluetooth speaker a while ago.

As long as notifications and ringtones come out clear, ill be fine.

Re: Speaker loudness and quality

You don't feel vibration through the back cover when the phone is at max volume? I find that hard to believe.

It is actually true, I read the S5 manual tonight and Samsung mentions vibrations at loud volumes caused due to the waterproofing seals.

I just tested my M8 with a sound reading machine. It maxed out at 85db. Insanely loud. Most other phones I have tested including the Note 3, iphone 5S all max out at 81db. It is also very clear sound on M8, but then the trade off is its length.

Yeah I noticed the vibration as well. Not really annoying to me, but it is there.

But yeah the M8 destroys a ton of phones in this department. It is one of it's key features. Samsung couldn't care less about phone sound quality. Even improved and added other features (waterproof) that take away from sound.
