Galaxy s6 experiencing extreme MMS compression after Marshmallow update

AC Question

After updating my Galaxy s6 to 6.0.1 a couple of months ago, I noticed any picture messages I received were very low quality, most around 20-25kb in size. This makes them extremely blurry, and any text in the pictures illegible.

I understand that pictures will be compressed through MMS, and I am not looking for an alternative way to send pictures (like through dropbox or email). My issue is that any pictures that I received before I updated were around the 300kb in size, which is considerably larger. My outgoing picture messages are only compressing to around 300kb in size still, so the problem is only incoming ones.

I'm not sure if this would be a problem with my device, marshmallow itself, my carrier or what, so any help in the right direction to try and fix this would be great. Thanks!

Hi, I suggest you start of with the carrier, see if they have some sort of limit on MMS files being received.

As a US Cellular agent, I've run into probably seven or eight people who've had the exact same issue as soon as they upgraded to Marshmallow on the S6 or S6 Edge, myself included. It's not our network (at least in the case of US Cellular) as we've already checked everything with technical support and the issue seems to only be with these two models of Samsung phones after the Marshmallow update. From what I've been able to tell, it doesn't happen to everyone who updates, just kind of sporadically. I have not done a factory wipe yet (yes, I know, I should have tried this by now), but plan to do so in the very near future. I'll try to let you know if this fixes the issue.

On a positive note, I have talked to our local Samsung representative about this and let him know about each case I've run across and he's been looking into it. I believe I will be speaking with him again today. If he has any information, I'll try to let you know.

Have you figured out if a hard reset fixed the problem? I'm putting off doing it myself....
