error message on laptop = the last usb device connected malfunctioned and is not recognised

Welcome to Android Central! When you connect via USB and swipe down the notification panel, do you see an option there to change from Charge Only to MTP?

If the phone doesn't recognize the USB connection either, then try a different cable.
