Galaxy S7 Phone contacts not syncing with Contacts app

I have been noticing that many of my GMail contacts aren't in my contacts tab in my phone app; I did a bit of digging and realized that the S7 has both a contact list in the phone app and a contacts app that apparently are not in sync. All my contacts from GMail are on my contacts app...but I can't find a way to sync the data from the Contacts app to the phone app...I don't want to have to go into a sperate app everytime I want to find someone. Any ideas?

Use the phone's Contacts app if all the contacts are in there.

So there are 2 apps involved here..."Phone" and "Contacts" The "Phone" app has a tab for contacts and it has most of my contacts in it (they may have been in there since my initial dump when I bought the phone, not sure, I don't add people often). Samsung must have designed a way to keep the phone and Contacts in sync, it seems unlikely they intended you to use two apps to make a call.
