So my battery drained quickly today... I went to check my use, and the second highest result was Gallery, at 38%. (After idle cell at 40%)
I don't think this is very normal... Is it?

I have read about a bug that happens to some folks where once you open gallery it will keep running in the background and will demolish the battery. Anytime you open the gallery just make sure you force stop it in manage applications. I have seen it go nuts on my phone sometimes but other times it closes out right.

I have experienced the same issue, but I can't remember which ROM I was using at the time (I think it was on stock). I never did figure out if it was the gallery itself, or another app accessing the gallery that causes the issue.

I had that issue on stock.
That was one of the things that led me to finally root mine. I got tired of that and Twidroid and Where all running all the time.

There is definately something on stock that causes it to run, but not the alternatives, so it's likely some Virgin installed app using it.

You can get Astro from the market. it's just a file manager but it can "replace" the gallery. You have to know where the files are though and navigate to them.

Use QuickPic it is a good app that has good features and it is free.

OP do you have a picassa account?

If so gallery links to picassa and shows your web albums.
So it might be a bug that is causing it to endlessly refresh.

So essentially it's safe to uninstall gallery and replace it with somethin more efficient? If so what's the best app?
