I haven't been paying close attention lately, is thee a root for Gingerbread on the Droid X yet? I really don't want to do much to a rooted phone, I just want to be able to back up my data from apps that don't sync or store data on the SD card and it appears that non-rooted Androids cannot do this mind-numbing simple and basic function! This is the first phone I've had in TEN YEARS that won't let me back up my data.

You can use MyBackup from Rerware LLC in the market as a non root user. They also have a donate version but I'm not sure of the perks. Lookout also has a backup option which you can investigate

I have it. According to ReWare themselves, it does not back up the data from third party applications unless either of two things are true:

  1. Phone is rooted
  2. The app in question is designed to be backed up by MyBackup

I have been running the ota Gingerbread on my DX since it came out. I used to tether under Froyo, but lost the ability to do so when I upgraded. I am going on vacation tomorrow, and I need to be able to tether. I SBF'ed back to Froyo ota build 340, then installed the dxgbrooted.zip then Wifi Tether beta and the TBH tether patch. Now I can tether on GB!

You could use pdaNet to tether without root.
