First I have an Oppo A96 CPH2333. Where does it store the backup on my computer? It never shows the path.

I have backed up my phone's internal app’s data and system data but it won't back up my sd card data. It just sits there seemingly forever. Why doesn't it complete it?

adb backup –shared.jpg

That is supposed to be backing up my sd card but it doesn't actually complete. It just sits there. I didn't enter a pw because I don't want one.

Here it is on the phone. The screen is the same as the backup screen for phone's internal app’s data and system data except it never gives the confirmation message that its complete. I don't get it. I followed the steps here exactly (Third: On Rooted Device). My phone is not rooted yet but backing up should be done regardless, right? I clicked BACK UP MY DATA. But it just turns grey and nothing else happens. When I backed up the phone's internal app’s data and system data it completed and it showed a confirmation message.

I think it stores on the path that adb is on. So wherever you have adb installed on your PC. It should create a backup.ab file in that folder.
Why doesn't it complete it?
The last line in the CLI says to unlock your phone. Did you do that?
I didn't enter a pw because I don't want one.
I think adb encrypts the data, which is why it asks for a password. I could be wrong on this...It's been a long time since I did a backup through adb.

My phone is not rooted yet but backing up should be done regardless, right?
Not necessarily. Root access is needed for a lot of what could be considered basic things in Android.

Yes. At first I forgot to allow the prompt on my phone. Once I did that you can see it completed.

So how am I supposed to backup before rooting when TWRP requires rooting which will wipe the data? I don't get it.

I've enabled enabled USB Debugging and OEM Unlocking in the phone's options. But I am stuck. I don't know which step I am supposed to do next under Pre-Requisites. I know that the bootloader has to be unlocked but how is it possible to backup the apps and data without rooting? Because as far as I understand it TWRP requires rooting. And it won't function without it being rooted?

The wiping of data is a security measure taken by Google. When you unlock or relock your phone, it is akin to a factory reset. As far as I know, there is no way around this.

The simplest answer is this: You can't. When buying a new phone, you need to decide if you want to root it or not. Unlock the bootloader the first time you turn the phone on, and then you will have the first step done before you have any data to lose.

Part of rooting/ROMs is knowing your steps before you do anything. I would also highly advise looking into learning how to restore your device before proceeding.

Something to keep in mind is this: The last I knew, rooting meant getting the modified bootloader image for your phone. You can't just willy-nilly use any image, you might get a bricked device. I did find this:
https://xdaforums.com/t/guide-root-oneplus-8t-coloros-11.4287481/

All in all, we are down to a question only you can answer: Is the custom ROM more important than your data? If your data is more important, then the discussion stops here, because you shouldn't go any further. If the ROM is more important, then proceed, wipe your data, and do a Nandroid backup once TWRP is installed.

You also have a concurrent thread about TWRP. I am tempted to close that one to avoid confusion; these questions could have arguably been in one thread since they are related.

I would honestly argue that this attempt at rooting should stop here, as you said in your other thread that you could not find a version of TWRP for your phone. I would advise against flashing a custom recovery that is not for your device, ESPECIALLY if this is your daily driver.

That is what I am trying to find out.

Yea I can't find a version of TWRP for my specific model. Guess I'll stop. As there is no point in trying to get a custom ROM when I can't even find the restore program for my phone.

I'll admit, I may have been a little harsh...but the way I read all your posts, you seemed hell-bent on getting a different ROM on your phone come hell or high water. If you really want to root/ROM, see if you can find a phone (Samsungs, the last I knew were good bets) on eBay or something that's dirt cheap. That way if you screw up, who cares? You still get your experience, you can test drive the ROM (I've flashed some that seemed pretty cool from posts and screenshots that were dumpster fires) before actually committing. You can also make sure you find a phone that's for your carrier so all you haver to do is swap SIMs.

Nah I just want to have a more customized phone. I hate youtube ads and other things that I want to disable. And I discovered that rooting and installing a custom ROM can achieve that.

I have BlueStacks X installed on my PC. Can I test ROMs with that? Or does it have to be on an actual phone?
