Gboard (the new Google Keyboard) Search Question

I am not able to use speech to text if I want to use the Google search button on the keyboard in the upper left corner. I can TYPE a search query but not speak it. As soon as I hit the microphone icon, Gmail or Messages+ reverts back to a (pre-Gboard) text or email screen. Is this the way it works or have I failed to set a preference correctly?? I looked at all possible settings and couldn't see anything I needed to change.

I think it's just a quirk of the interface. That voice button is not part of the search feature but it appears to be since it's in the same line the search commands.

Probably a use case that they missed.. they need to make it more obvious that the voice stuff isn't available when you are accessing the search button.
