Gear 2 - hammer looking for a nail?

So I bought the gear 2 to go along with my Note 3 but besides the cool factor, I still grab for my phone when I get messages or calls. So in effect, my Gear 2 becomes more of a conversation piece vs anything that's all that useful.

I guess each user is different but wondering if there are others out there with the same issue.

I've been looking at them all night long pondering purchase. My problem is I want the rose gold color but that's $100 more and I don't want to spend that much All the rest of them are too "guy" or "kid" looking.

I had the grey Neo and it looked good, not too man-ish. I have the black/silver Gear 2 now and size wise it doesn't overpower my wrist.

I have the rose gold note 3 and I like the idea of the watch matching the phone colors.

For me, it works well for what I want, which is notifications. Having to pull the phone out and type in a 6 digit pin every two minutes just to see if it's a message from a client gets old quickly. I also like that I can receive real time images from a video surveillance system via MMS right on the watch, but again that's a notification. So for me that's the nail.

I saw that feature and it kind of didn't settle right with me. If you lose your watch how do you get into your phone? I do not use a pen or a gesture at this point on my phone. I would prefer not to on the watch. Is it possible to disable this feature?

When you set it up to autolock your phone, it prompts you to set up a pattern lock (to put into your phone) if you are more than roughly 5 feet away. There is a separate pin lock that you can set up on the watch, then you would have to type in a pin on the watch if the watch was more than roughly 5 feet from the phone. Basically, if you're holding the phone and wearing the watch, no password on either is needed. Both locks are optional. Hope this clears it up! (Not sure how clearly I explained it...)

I'm not sure if you were replying to me. I wasn't referring to the link between the watch and the phone. I have a PIN on my phone (standard security lock screen) so if it gets stolen it is harder to access. Every time I get an email or text message, I have to pull the phone out of my pocket and type in the PIN just to see the message. The Gear allows me to skip that, or at least see enough of the message to decide if it's important enough to read/respond to right away or can wait until later.

Not sure how even to reply to this. It's like saying "When I leave home I don't take Gear 2 with me so it is useless". I am working in noisy office where I often walk around and my phone (Verizon Note 3 stock ROM) stays in charging cradle on my desk. I also use LG TonePro Bluetooth headset with multipoint pairing capability, so it is paired with both Note 3 and Gear 2. It is very convenient to screen and answer the calls from watch. Here are some of great benefits this watch gives me in addition to obvious ones: can change watchface to match the wardrobe (using stock wallpapers and 3-rd party apps like Watch Styler, Multi-Watch, etc.); have flashlight, calculator, music player right on the wrist and independent of the phone; ability to toggle settings - WiFi, vibrate, silence, etc. - without having to pull the phone out (Toggles app); have vibrating alarm on my wrist so that it doesn't wake my wife up (and, hopefully, with update to Sleep Genius alarm will also be adaptable to sleep cycle), basic TV remote in the watch is very useful. Camera for quick mental notes and even pictures is great. And I haven't even had a chance to play with any exercise features. All that is more than justifies this device for me.
Tizen OS, though, makes me nervous. I really wish Samsung stuck with Android or, better yet, Google wear. We'll see how it pans out.

With a 5.7 inch phone I know I can't take it out all the time when out and about the gear is needed.

MapMyRun is very cool (when it doesn't lose the BT connection, which so far, isn't too often) on the watch, compared to looking at the stats (distance mostly) on my phone which always resides in a pocket. Bringing my arm up turns on the screen and I can instantly see my current distance (plus it's easier to see in bright sunlight than a Note 2. I presume an S5's screen is brighter than the watch but I won't be getting one of those so for now I make do with the dim screen of the Note 2).

Also, using the watch to control the TV's is a freaking godsend...

Like anything new in our lives for creatures of habit it might take time to retrain yourself as a reflex of actions, I have been lucky as I have been wearing watches all my life from a multitude of high end Casio's to even one of the very first "Seiko Pulsar Calculator" watch in 1978 and others such as Fossil/Palm OS, MSN Direct, most recently was Sony smartwatch 1 & 2 then of course Samsung Gear Neo 2 , so if this is new to you it will take some getting use to.
and FYI?, I still have all my watches that are 42 in total over that half century of collecting them!.... I am glad once again seeing people use a wrist watch! my Seiko Pulsar still works and gets compliments and interest when I wear it on occasion especially to the CES show here in Vegas.

Your phone will lock if you are only 5 feet away from your Gear?? When I have my phone set to lock when out of range of my Gear, I have to go 100+' away before it locks.

Yup. Very handy. I leave my phone on my desk up front, and spend a lot of the day in my warehouse. Phone is locked unless I'm holding it. Sensitivity is almost my wingspan, ie. watch on left wrist, phone in right hand spread apart almost far enough to lock it on auto. Glad to hear you're taking your watch in to AT&T. Sounds like you've had nothing but trouble with the particular watch you got.
