Can I just use a gender changer plug to hook up to usb, using my existing micro usb cable
To hook up external stoarge to my nexus 7 instead of a USB otg cable? Is there something else unique about the otg cable?

Yes, there is something unique. It uses a fifth pin to signal that it's an OTG cable.

Yep, I bought 3 male microUSB to femaleUSB OTG dongles. Got to be careful of them sticking out, if you hit one it could damage your charging port.
