Gesture Typing Not Automatically Adding Spaces

What determines which forms accept auto spaces? Some text fields I have to press space after every word and it becomes a hassle. Just curious.

I know that browser URL bars and password entry fields don't auto space.

My nexus 4 doesn't work for gesture typing. I went into settings and have it checked off. So I don't know what is wrong. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
