get it now?

the lg optimus s is an awesome phone i had originally the optimus v then i got on contract with sprint with the htc evo shift wanted to try the whole sense crap which i hated i didnt even use it and the battery life was horrible recharge 4 to 5 times a day sprint gave me a new battery and it was the same 4 to 5 times a day always had to be by a charger so i traded it to someone for an lg optimus for sprint got the update had no problems but touch sensitivity so i rooted it put on gROM and love it awesome phone two my friends and my girlfriend has it stock of course and they love it

and its a very durable phone too my friend dropped it off a balcony three floors up and it didnt break:)

I absolutely love this phone (in fact, I just purchased a second one), but I don't know if at this point, almost a year in to its life that started as a mid-range phone, I would waste an upgrade on it. Especially when I just purchased mine from craigslist for $50. However, if you absolutely do not want to spend any money on a phone either now or in the future and you have no problems using your upgrade, then this is the phone to get.

I loved my Optimus! I only moved to the Nexus b/c I could and it was free at BB at the time. I did root and install a custom rom on my phone, but even stock, it was a great mid-range phone. It's not the Evo for sure, but it's decent. And if you want to upgrade right this second and for free, I'd take this over the replenish in a heartbeat. Rooting isn't that hard if you decide that's the route you want to take. But I don't think you'll be disappointed... and if you are, Sprint has a 14 day return policy.

Oooo...I have to chime in. I still keep my optimus around and use it now and again just to browse and play games on around the house. Not to mention, if my current phone poops out ill have a nice spare to fall back on.

Yes the Ops is still a nice phone if your not asking it to run like a galaxy s 2 4g touch on steroids and a magnifier.

I've had the Optimus S for over a year now. I got it for my upgrade, it was "free" I had to pay taxes on it so it came down to about $25. I think it is a great phone for the price. I had it stock for about six months and worked great. I never experienced the problems some people are writing about, but they did occur to some people.

Now I have my phone rooted and running gRom and it is a great phone. I get over a day of battery while listening to music, surfing, reading and sending emails, Calls, and a bit of texting. Overall I am extremely happy with the phone. Rooting will make it a better phone, but it is not a hard thing to do. People who brick their phone end up with a brick because they don't follow directions. The guides are very comprehensive and if there is something you don't understand there are plenty of people willing to help you. I rooted my phone knowing nothing about how to do it and I never bricked it, just follow instructions.

Now as to your question. If you have the cash to spend I would suggest getting a better phone the Galaxy S II is a good phone, the Iphone is too (of course they carry a $200 price tag). If you are on a budget then sure go for the Optimus. It is, in my opinion, a great phone for the price.

Ooh...I didn't even think about the tax issue. I got the phone when it first came out, but I got it new off of eBay for $200 outright since I was only one year in to my two year contract and was pretty fed up with my Samsung Moment (talk about a crappy phone, even when rooted and ROMd). Then last week I dropped my phone and broke the SD card reader so I hopped on to Craigslist and bought a used one for $50 even though my contract was up because I didn't want to waste my upgrade but still loved the phone. Given this tax situation, I in essence got a contract-free Optimus S for an extra $25 and still have an upgrade available should, say, the Galaxy Nexus ever make it to Sprint.

Non 4G Smart Phone running Android on Sprint's SERO program. so for $49/mo after taxes/fees I have an awesome, rooted, Reborn ROM phone that lets me VPN, stream music and videos, play games I want to play (Scrabble, etc), Geocache perfectly, do banking, etc.

I had the iPhone 3G for a year for business and felt I had hit the limit of what I could do with it. It was jailbroken; I was installing everything useful. After a while, it was just stagnant.

The options available for this phone are awesome.

I had a Palm Treo Pro on Sprint, qualified for an upgrade, and then they offerred the "$0" promotion for the Optimus S. Sprint CS said I was a bit early from my eligibility but had me say "current phone has gotten a little defective" and ta-da, was cleared for this upgrade.

I don't run flash games; I finished Angry Birds with 3 stars on every level on it.

Battery with the custom ROM with great. Someone mentioned roaming does kill the battery... they are spot on. Though I noticed that in any phone I've had.

I was not in the mood to pay for a phone really, and this is an amazing "free" phone. It'll last well throughout my contract with Sprint and by the time it's upgrade time who knows what will be out.

It let me keep SERO though, and that was my major selling point. The community here was an added bonus!

Also, my dev work for it runs perfectly.

Up until about 1 month ago I would have said, yes, get it. As of now, I completely hate it and want to smash it with a fcking hammer. The GB update absolutely destroyed the phone, and now a week after having to do a factory reset because of a boot loop, I have stopped receiving gmail notifications for no apparent reason. I didn't add any apps, didn't change a damn thing. I just noticed yesterday that I'm not receiving notifications. It continues today. Missing work emails because of it. I'm absolutely livid. I've owned this phone for 10 months now and I am on the verge of running it over or dropping it out of an airplane after my experience with it this past month.

I have had my phone about a year and I really love it. I like the size and the look and feel of it. I have the Gingerbread up date and after a few minor problems it runs like a charm. My phone is just a stock phone and I have no issues with battery or memory. It works pretty well as a phone, at least as well as the Sprint network will allow, and it is the main way I check email. I use my computer to answer my email. All in all a pretty nice free phone.

If you are going to get charged that extra $10 a month, might aswell get a 4G phone.

Its a good phone. It has it quirks, like every other phone has. Battery life seems great compared to bigger screens phones. Flash does work and works good. Overclocking it does wonders with game lag. Rooting adds unlimited possibilities and unlimited unknown problems. Google does not update their software, so once you buy into an old phone, you are stuck with what you got. Phone industry changes every 6 months so you will never be on top unless you have money to burn.

haven't had it? You have to be joking.

Both my wife and I have it. We both cannot stand it. I work with three other people that have it. They hate it. My father has it, he also cannot stand it.

So, looking at what the others in this thread have said: in order for this phone not to completely suck, you have to root it (and risk bricking it) and load an unsupported software. Got it.

WOW. So, basically you don't have the confidence in yourself or your technical abilities to root your phone, yet you're hanging out in the forums of a website that prides itself on the knowledge and ability of it's developers to provide you with the tools and advice needed to get the most out of ANY android phone.

I thought the phone was OK, not the best, until I came here and trusted myself and the developers here and rooted, installed a custom rom, and themed my phone. Right now, my phone runs flash, has a ton of internal storage, can copy anything to the SD card, runs gingerbread, and looks nothing at all like the stock phone I received FOR FREE.

If you want to use a phone out of the box without modifying it to your liking, that's your choice, but you should have maybe thought about that before getting the Optimus S, then. You don't know what you're missing.

I had the Optimus T, same thing, before this S2. Everybody kept saying it was an "entry level" phone. I thought "no way. Thus thing is way too awesome. They must mean mid-level".
But I ran out and bought the best anyway, and obviously love it.
But $600 better than the LG?
Not.
Now that I can compare the two, that Optimus was one bad phone.

Your family must have the worse luck in the world and happened to buy the only fluke Optimus' out there.

I was about to give up on this phone when the Gingerbread was pushed to it. It slowed down, battery died quick, other nagging issues. I found this forum, took the plunge and rooted and installed gROM on it.

Completely different phone. I honestly am happy with it now. Snappy. Good battery life. Reliable. No issues.

I've had it a year now. Bought it when the other real other option was the EVO and I didn't want that large of a phone. This one is what I consider a perfect size.

That said - if I was getting one now (it is a year old), I would probably get something a little newer just because the S is 1+ years old and they have made improvements. BUT - if the phone continues running the way it is now, I'm not sure that I'll be chomping at the bit to replace the S when my upgrade time arrives.

update: my notifications seem to be working again after 4 days of not working. so my most recent major complaint about the phone may be resolved. i will hold off smashing it with a hammer for now.

I will agree with what everyone else has said. This phone rocks for free! My whole family has this phone and we all love it. I would recommend it any day to any person.

this is my first android phone, so I may not be able to compare it to much (my last phone was the original samsung instinct in pink--cute and mostly reliable, but buggy and zero customization), but I adore it.

I was able to customize plenty on stock rom--launcher pro/go launcher, go sms, flash notify, quickpic, and other apps quickly resolved some of the things I initially wasn't sold on with my phone. but I rooted (and not the one click--the harder way, which I was still able to do as a complete android/rom/rooting newbie thanks to these amazing forums and kind people who are willing to answer questions!) and have installed reborn rom and have never looked back. I understand the warranty thing, but nandroid backups are the way to go and honestly if I can root, anyone can root.

the phone itself is quicker and less buggy than my instinct, though as I've added apps it has slowed down and battery life has gone down. but that's not the phone--that's just me downloading stuff and hanging with friends refusing to close.

I haven't been asked to upgrade to gingerbread at all, and my mom has the same phone (stock) and I don't think she has, either? so I don't know what's up with that, but from what it sounds like, the upgrade isn't worth it.

overall, I think it's worth it--my phone is great, and the community here is as well. the evo looks fantastic too, and you would probably enjoy one if you went for one, but I'd check out their rooting subforum on here too, first. I think the optimus' is one of the best.

I think this is the first phone I have ever had that I am not anxious to replace! but my upgrades are every two years, so I hope it holds up like this for another year!

ugh I forgot that $10 a month charge, though. I got my phone just in time to miss out on that. avoiding the 4G charge was another perk of the optimus at the time. I still would probably choose it today, though.

the gingerbread update was only offered for about a week before sprint finally realized what a piece of trash it was and yanked it...
