Get notifications in airplane mode (texting via WiFi)?

Is there a way to get notifications when in airplane mode? I'm trying to work out how to prevent the low cell signal here from eating my battery, and I think that I can put the phone into airplane mode and use google voice for text messages and phone calls over WiFi when I'm home. However, in airplane mode (that disables Verizon phone and texting functionality), I don't see how to get notifications to work when a text message comes in via google voice. I get text messages that way, I just don't get notifications.

Any ideas for this one? My phone is rooted, if that brings any ideas to mind *smile*.

I can use regular Verizon cell phone and texting when I'm away from home, but at home I have a very marginal cell phone (and 3G) signals, so I need to have a plan B.
