Hey guys I have had my Nexus since Launch day and I really enjoy the phone.
I lurk around here reading about the issues about the phone and how hopefully a software update will fix most of them. The ONE GLARING issue I cant get past and is really bothering me now is the internet connection. I mean one of the main reasons I purchased this phone was for the 4g fast internet. I had the iphone 4 previously and it didn't lose 3g as much as this phone loses its connection. I have more times looked down at my Nexus and have seen just gray bars. So sad.

Its getting to the point where I may go back. Are you guys experiencing the same issues????

U being sarcastic?

Sorry, no. Dead serious. The phone is awesome, but the data connection is crazy bad. Shockingly bad. I-want-to-throw-it-through-a-window bad.

I'm gonna go to the VZ store and complain a bit more today, and I expect that they'll do nothing to help me. Not sure if it's worth fighting for a replacement phone with the 1515.10 baseband or not...

O ok. I agree, its so disturbing. I thought about asking for a replacement phone but whats the point if its going to be the same. I wanna go back to my iphone til they figure this out. I was somewhere the other day and needed to get online to get a phone number or address or something, went to go online and nothing. Like you said wanted to throw the phone thru the window.

I rarely have this issue but I also dont live in a 4g area so I have my phone set to prefer CDMA. I have this issue most when Im going between Wifi and 3g.

At this point, you really have to be in a strong LTE area or you will intermittently drop 4g coverage. This is supposed to be fixed in an update, like you said, but the ETA is unknown. Try setting your phone to prefer CDMA only for a day or two and turn wifi off and see if the issue continues, I would be willing to bet it wouldn't.

I know you got the phone for 4g, and I'm sure its really really fast when it works right, but right now its just broken in most areas. (For this phone)

EDIT: I guess I should add that the main reason this occurs is because the phone takes time to switch between radios, a longer time than most phones. If the process fails a certain number of times during the switch the radios just shut down data completely as to not drain the battery down (so ive heard), this is why it can happen when switching between wifi and 3g as well.

I've tried turning off LTE (no real difference) and I always turn off wifi when I leave the house. Again, no difference. Grrrr.

Ya I have no problem with the fact I wont get 4g everywhere but when I dont get 4g I dont get ANY INTERNET CONNECTION! LIke just gray bars of death!
Ill try the CDMA setting and see if that helps.
O and I never use WIFI
Thanks

I'm not sure what to tell you there. Pretty much any instance of lost data connection that I've read about has occured in 4g areas while using both he CDMA and LTE radio. Since I only use CDMA and dont have a problem while I'm on it, it seemed to me like trying CDMA only would be a viable option.

Ok update... So i just went into the settings and changed the network setting to CDMA only and bam I am up and running with 3g. So I guess when I dont have 4g it doesnt toggle back to 3g? Irritating.

It should toggle back to 3g, it just takes times to do it (like i said, longer than usual with this phone, at least till an update fixes that) and some of the time it fails completely, thats when you get your perma grey bars. You will probably get grey bars when it switches between 4g and 3g but they will also turn blue again after the connection is successful, if its successful.

it does, it just takes time. i am in a 4g area most of the time, but there are little parts around the city that i can only get 3G. i have not found myself without data one time in the week i have owned this phone.

i have read that it takes a good 30-40 seconds to go from 4g to 3g, but maybe 10 seconds to go from 3g to 4g.
when the phone is in CDMA/LTE mode, it fights for LTE. so if you are in an area where there is LTE, and it looses the LTE signal, it wants to get it back hence why it takes so long to drop to 3g...it is trying to get 4g but just cant.

putting the phone in CDMA mode only will only keep 3g and wont want to "fight" anything so you will always have a 3g connection. not only will you always have data, you will also have better battery life since the LTE radio wont be searching for a signal.

Try a new sim card. I recently got a new one and started picking up 4G in places I've never had 4G

I understand it may take seconds to switch between 4g and 3g. Im talking hours where I dont have service. And switching to 3g and leaving it there is fine but the phone is supposed to switch on its own and it doesnt. Also doesnt get 4g where it should.

Lol you are re-iterating something that has been answered bro.

There is a fix in the works (apparently), it is just going to take patience.

I have been running various roms over the past month or so. At one point (not sure if it was my first flashed rom or still on stock), I had gray bars all the time. I am running the newer radios with 4.0.3 based roms and haven't had any issues lately. Switching seems to be faster as well.
I would have to assume that an update would fix your problems.

I'll have to try that. Thank you for the suggestion. :D

I'm sorry but there are a whole bunch of threads on this. And supposedly the update will fix it. But I can say this even 4.0.3 radios are not the best. Not a whole can be done. Its not just nexus its every 4g phone with hand off issues

Agreed. The updates will slowly fix the problem, but it seems that it will always be a work in progress.
Also, it is unfair to compare signal reception of strictly 3G phones with LTE phones.
