Clearing cache does help for some things and people do it regularly anyway in Recovery mode. That was a strong example if it did actually cure the bad keyboard and unlock problems. This probably won't help with the battery issues, but I thought I'd post something for people who might be reading this post because they are having trouble with some apps bogging down their phone.
I've was having a major lag with my texting - the letters I typed wouldn't show up for a couple minutes if at all. Sometimes, I wasn't able to swipe the screen to wake up the phone. That was a big problem At any rate, I cleared the cache on my messaging app and Nova launcher. Those problems seem to have gone away. Time will tell as to whether that's a permanent fix. If it's not, I'll break down and do a factory reset.
I'm not too pleased with this Kitkat update. My phone was perfectly fine without it.
Doing a reset, now that I've done it, is not too bad, though it can be aggravating the 1st time. I would turn all the Samsung sync options on beforehand, as that's the 1st thing the phone will ask to sync from after a fresh start up. Also back up to Kies on a pc, but it doesn't restore everything. I didn't sync too much to Google, but it helps with apps etc. I drag copies of my photos, music and documents from a pc. Something like Dropbox or Google drive is good. I had forgot I was linked to Dropbox and it restored some photos and screenshots for me.
More experienced people recommend Helium Back-Up. I had to restore a lot of apps manually. There are many ways to try a reset, but you can lose things if you are unaware.
