I am not going to lie, I know this is going to sound suspicious but here it goes, I am a college student and today i found a Galaxy S 2 in one of my lecture halls, and I made an announcement at the end of class to see if anyone was missing their phone and no one said anything. I went to the lost and found in the building and they said they would not take it as they do not take phones. I am just trying to return it to it's owner and the only way I know how to get around the lock is to wipe the phone which doesn't help me at all. I am just looking for a way to return this device, any help would be cool.

Call the carrier (assuming you can figure that out) and give them the serial number or ESN number or something...they SHOULD be able to look it up by that number and possibly get you an address.

Yeah that's ur best bet. The esn should be under the battery . If the phone doesn't have swipe only to unlock and has a pin or pattern or any other security to unlock enabled your not getting in unless you guess the passkey. Good luck getting it back to its owner.

Well I called AT&T (as that was the carrier) and I explained the situation and the rep told me "We are not aloud to give out any information or contact the owners of the phone, so it looks like the phone is yours now, would you like to activate on your line?" At which point I told her I had Verizion and no thank you, so now I guess my question is, if I cannot find the owner of this phone, can I just wipe the phone somehow?

Oh so its an unlocked GSM version then guess. Im not 100% but maybe you can use wugs tool on ur pc and see if You cant wipe it. I would check out the root and hacks section. They might be more helpful.

No, sorry my previous statement was a little misleading, it is not an unlocked GSM version, at least I do not believe, It has an AT&T sim in it, but I am not sure how to tell if it is only for AT&T.

That'd be GSM.

But one question...
If you power it off and back on is there an unlocked lock below the Google logo on boot?
If so you can flash a custom recovery and use ADB to remove the lock screen security storage...thus not wiping anything and granting you the ability to return it.
If the boot loader is locked you're stuck doing a factory reset.
Power off.
Hold volume down volume up and power until the android with an open chest menu is shown.
Use the volume rocker to select recovery and power to enter.
Volume down+Power (Maybe Volume up?) To access recovery.
Factory reset.

No, it doesn't seem that it is unlocked, and I cannot get it to boot into the boot loader for some reason, it just pulse vibrates when I am holding the buttons down.

Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Android Central Forums

wait..I went back to read the op again. the phone your trying to break into is not a galaxy nexus but an S2? if so you might want to try the S2 forums. I for one have never owned an S2 so I am not sure how it works at all, but they might.
