Getting stuck in 1x

I love this phone it runs better than any mobile device I've ever owned but I am having one incredibly annoying problem. Whenever my signal drops to 1x I can't seem to reconnect to 3g unless I disconnect from the mobile network then reconnect or restart my phone. Does anyone else have this issue?

Just to clarify...

I always have a 3g connection at home, but if I go out and my signal drops to 1x it WON'T go back to 3g when I get home unless I manually restart the connection. Maybe I need to switch it for a new one even though I'd rather not...

I have a similar issue. Sometimes when I lose signal completely (for example, traveling in the subway, then reemerging) my phone will not reconnect to voice or data service. I have to force the phone into airplane mode, then switch back in order for the phone to get service.

Any clues?
