Emailed HTC and they informed me it will be on the Incredible 2 on or before August 1st (of course couldn't give an exact date). Unfortunately this is not really new news, but I thought i'd share anyway.

That's almost 8 months after the original release of Gingerbread, right? Awesome. I hope Google/Manufacturers/Carriers make good on their claim that they will provide more timely updates in the future. :/

It sounds like the OG Inc will get GB sooner than that. This whole GB release across numerous phones is a mess. Inc2 is a very appealing phone, but I wouldn't touch it without GB or the ability to root and install a custom Rom. Heck, if it had shipped with GB, I would have bought it!

OG Inc will get it before Inc2. I believe on here, AC, they announced it here recently(last 2 weeks) the the OG Inc would be getting GB by say June or end of May time frame? Inc S in europe, GB has already hit the carriers so they are starting to get theirs. I don't see Aug. 1. I see before then.

As far as it being close to 8 months after GB initial release, that's not too bad. It's how long they take to put ICS(ice cream sandwich) on the 2011 devices is the question. Only time will tell.

Thanks for sharing OP

But will it be 2.3.4? so we can actually use that front camera to talk with people on a computer via Google Talk?

For the Inc2? I think Inc S got 2.3.4? Not 100% sure though. I would guess we should get 2.3.4 but then again, Google+HTC+VZW = disappointment with 2.3.3.

8 < 18 so by their standards, it's a timely update.

This is the big issue with this 18 month policy, it never is defined how quickly they must go out. It doesn't stop a manufacture from releasing 1 single update on the last week of the 18 month rule.

Ok, so why is everyone so anxious to get GB? From what I'm reading, there really aren't many feature upgrades from Froyo. A redesigned keyboard is the biggest difference I've read about. Or is it just because it's an upgraded OS?

I just want a good video chat app that allows calling PCs so I can tell my kids good night while on business travel. If there was a third party app that did that well, I wouldn’t even care about GB at all. But so far I have not heard anyone confirm the existence of a good 3rd party app.

2.3.4 supports Google Talk with video.

No, no. A lot of people seem to.misunderstand this.

The 18 month thing means a phone will get any new update that comes out for 18 months after the phone released. Meaning, if an update came out 17.9 months later, the phone will get that update even if that means the phone will actually get the update after the 18 months.

Makes sense. But are there any requirements of how quickly an update must be delivered? Therein lies the problem. So they come out with an update and it takes them 8-10 months to release? That's just unacceptable.

Apple comes out with an update and everyone has it within a week or whatever it is. I know Apple has direct access to the phone and Google does not but that's Google's problem and you better believe they finally recognize it as one. How quickly they address it will be interesting.

Well there is some security flaw in froyo 2.2 that GB fixes. That's sort of a big upgrade. That is why when you read about a new Android phone get's released and it still comes with Froyo with that flaw, it's a SMH moment for techies. Like a WTF man!?

I'm in the same boat with the comment below about having a working video chat feature within google voice instead of trying out app after app and coming up short. But, then again, that feature is in 2.3.4, not 2.3.3. So depending on what version of GB the Inc 2 gets, we will all be thankful or disappointed and thankful at the same time.

Gingerbread adds a few noticeable features to FroYo, but 3D graphics acceleration, native video chat, new text selection, and an improved keyboard are pretty serious.

noob to android but if i get an inc2 say, tomorrow, will i be able to update it to Gingerbread down the road? how does that work? (used to Blackberry OS updates)

this is my question too. probably gonna grab this phone in a month or 2...

When gb is released for the dinc2 you will have multiple ways of applying it one will be going to setting scroll down to software update click that then check now. If its available you will see it their and the phone should take over with only a few clicks needed from the user. Their may also be a manual way of applying it

Reading all the stories of older devices(no more than a year old) now getting GB but only getting 2.3.3, doesn't make it likely that the Inc 2 will get 2.3.4 to enable the google video chat. I mean if the EVO 4G can't get 2.3.4 love, why are we to believe our phone will?

I've tried all other video chat apps(ones worth trying) and they seem to fail in some aspect of the video portion. Tango was the closest one to working and that failed.

Skype on our phones(android) is a waste. No video chat feature at all. iOS get's the love there.

Here's to hopeful thinking. :)
