Gingerbread News/Speculation

could this be the reason for tha long wait of upgrading to 2.2? hopefully cuz i dont see a reason why my epic is still running 2.1.

Obviously not. There is tangible evidence in the form of leaked 2.2 test firmware, and Sprint and Samsung both continue to promise a 2.2 release. Actually, neither has ever promised it before the end of the year.

that would be awesome but i doubt it. if they were going toi do that then why would they have pushed dk28 to developer phones? seems like they are still working on froyo

They could have abandon the build and decided to concentrate on Gingerbread. My guess is that Sprint was ready to push 2.2 out but they pulled the reins back for 2.3.

I'm LOVING my Epic, and am really positive on Galaxy S, but come on guys. This IS Samsung we're talking about. I SERIOUSLY doubt that 2.3 will be on our phones instead of 2.2.1, especially considering the state that the Froyo update is currently in.

Not trying to rain on anyone's parade here, but I'd just be happy to EVENTUALLY get a 2.3 update.

I'd be even HAPPIER to get an official 2.2 update... Like tomorrow...

I doubt we'll get it too but the Nexus S is basically a Galaxy S with a curved screen. Same specs just different radios from our Epics.

I’m not so sure on completely skipping FroYo, but I am willing to bet that we will eventually see Gingerbread. I have said it before that Samsung does have a leg up in that it has had it’s hands on Gingerbread for quite some time now. Seeing as how the Nexus S is nearly identical on the hardware side compared to the Galaxy S phones, I would be surprised if Samsung was not working on a Gingerbread build for TouchWiz.

Even MORE wishful thinking? I guess we're all guilty... :) Either / or is fine with me, but just give me SOMETHING! And SomeAudioGuy said it best...

"like tomorrow..." ;)

While I do agree with the tweet in that article, I do not agree with the conclusion that the article jumps to. Our updates are named based on date of build, DK28 being November 28. I don't see why Froyo would continue to be updated until then if Samsung has had Gingerbread long enough to have the Nexus S ready to launch this month. We will see Froyo soon, and Gingerbread relatively soon after (and before Moto/HTC =P).

Well yes and no.
There are what, SIX different Galaxy S models, each with little hardware differences (radios, storage, LED flashes, LCD Ticker, keyboard), and NONE of them have NFC hardware (which was a big selling point for Nexus S).

I'm HOPING we do get 2.3, but I think we should all be prepared for Samsung NOT providing it for current handsets, and rolling it out for future models that DO include NFC.

Financially it just doesn't make THAT much sense to roll out Gingerbread development and dealing with carriers, times six different handsets, LONG after you've gotten your customer's money...

You'd just want them to buy new phones.

But on the other side of the argument is the fact that will people want to buy handsets from you in the future if you have a history of short sticking your existing customers? Sure, phones will still come off the shelves, but ignoring your current customer base and current line of phones will eventually come back to bite you in the you-know-what. Most manufacturers know that it is in their best interest to support the device with updates for as long as they can. It's easy with delays and bugs to let frustration fly out the window and accuse them of doing otherwise.

I just want flash at this point already. This will deff influence my next but when my upgrade comes up and there are new phones out. Disappointing.

I'm not too concerned about 2.3, unless some new revelations about performance or features are discovered, I don't see there being a significant advantage of 2.3 over 2.2 besides copy paste across the entire os.
I will say that Samsung would be stupid to not support their current installed base on the hopes that Nexus S sells better than Nexus One did.

Google confirmed that Gingerbread is coming to the Nexus One. Why wouldnt they release it to the more powerful Galaxy S line?

Personally, I'd LOVE it if they skipped...it'd shut up all the Samsung haters real quick that's for sure. They would have to issue a formal statement however. Something like: "We know you've all be patiently waiting for the froyo update, and in light of our launch of the Nexus S, we want to include the Galaxy S family as well in the holiday festivities. This being the case, please patiently wait until Dec 25th for your present...2.3 OTA being pushed to all Galaxy S devices on all carriers including the newly released Galaxy Tab."

But if I they can't do it that soon, then I'll take froyo this month and gingerbread by March (hopefully) at latest. (Trying to be realistic here...3 months isn't unreasonably long after an OTA in Dec.)

im actually really content with froyo for the time being.

gingerbread seems kinda lame. nothing i could really use. maybe when i get a new phone to take advantage of the NFC thing
