Hi Gang -

New here and thinking about making the switch over to Android - and I'm pretty sure the TB would be my device (Go easy on me I'm a long time BlackBerry user).

Rooting my device will not be an option, and if I'm reading everything correct, the TB will be released with Froyo. Is that correct? Will the device get Gingerbread? How important will it be to get Gingerbread? If it's not getting the update, is it worth considering a different device?

Thanks in advance for pointing me in the right direction!

As far as I am aware, it will be shipping with Froyo and will get the Gingerbread update around May/June. I have never had an Android either but from what I have read, it is the only way to go. Cant wait to get my hands on one!

Gingerbread at this point, isn't incredibly desirable, the list of extra features is very niche. Froyo 2.2 added some of the most important features like "install to sd" <-- BIG one.

Also since both of you are going to be new to android. Don't get too frustrated at first. Some people pick it up quick and don't have a problem, but others it takes a good month of "say what?" until the "Ahah!" moment. But android really is way more versatile than iOS, blackberry and palm (and wp7 but who wants that?).

The main features I am looking for (and the reason I've been a BB user for so long) is the accuracy and speed of corporate email. Wasn't that upgraded in Gingerbread?

I'm a network admin and handle a large corp Exchange environment. I'm not aware of any corp Exchange / MS ActiveSync enhancements in Gingerbread. The MS ActiveSync protocol hasn't really changed much in the past few years since it launched. You can tell your phone to sync your corp mail as often or little as you like, which folders, and how many days back of mail you want to go. Calendar & Contacts as well if you desire. You'll be happy :)

gingerbread isn't a necessity but it is nice to have. it offers better speed, cosmetic improvements, and better gaming so if those things don't matter to you, you don't really need it.

it is, but you can get the Gingerbread keyboard in the market, at least to hold you over for now.

Is it easy to keep MS synced contacts and phone contacts separate?

I use Exchange email on my Incredible. It is amazingly FAST! Literally, within 2-3 seconds of an email hitting my desktop, it is also hit my phone. If I delete email on my desktop, it is automatically deleted on my phone and vice versa. This is SO much better and faster than my old BB ever was!

I would rather have stock Gingerbread... but we cannot get everything we want. Hopefully the devs gobble this device up and we will be rooted and running CM7 in a matter of days.

i have a question about rooting your phone using these ROMS do any of these still allow access to marketplace? do you lose any function (besides ui skin which most want to get rid of anyway)

You will still have access to the Market from a rooted and rom'd phone. Rooting just permits access to the protected data space on the phone to allow removing unnecessary apps/bloatware.

Each Custom ROM will add or remove things like bloatware, added extra's to allow for more tweaking, AOSP vs Sense etc.

I think DEV's need to figure out a way we can "root" the phone to just shut off Sense. Behind Sense is stock Android.

You're on the right track, but that's not entirely true. The custom overlays, especially ones which add a lot of features or tweaks to Android like Sense, are baked into the operating system. I guess "overlay" is a deceiving term, because it's much more than just an overlay. Components of the OS itself are modified for Sense, MotoBlur, Touchwiz, etc, so it's a lot more complicated than just turning it off.
