Was anyone using the leaked version of 2.3.3 that had backlight issues and the 2.3.4 release fixed it? Just debating on whether I want to force the update or wait for the OTA to spare losing all apps and such which wouldn't kill me. Posting this, by the way, using RemoteDroid which is pretty freaking neat.

Root of the sd card means to drag the file into the sd card main and not a folder in the sd card.

Not sure you can apply the OTA over 2.3.3 leak. If coming from 2.2 then you won't lose your apps/data if you manually update with the OTA file.

You will lose your data using the file taken from the tmobile store sd cards, which I believe is the method used to upgrade from the 2.3.3 leak.

Just got my OTA today. I had downloaded the file but wanted to wait for the OTA, if I didn't get it by Sep 1 I was gong to do it manually. But the OTA worked fine, took about 20 minutes and now shows 2.3.4.

The black status bar looks strange at first, new icons, etc. but I do like the green "4G" icon. My SD card is intact, all is well.

My girlfriend got hers overnight last night and it went through just fine. I'm debating on just dropping mine on my card manually rather than wait for the OTA as I have 2.3.3 leaked on mine and I can't recall if anyone's confirmed they've had the OTA show up on a leaked build of Gingerbread.

No, cannot use the update.zip on 2.3.3. The assert check fails. Will need to use the PC10IMG.zip (posted on other threads/forums.)

How do I go about backing up the apps that are on my G2? When I plug in the phone with the USB cable, I see the contents of the SD card, but not the apps that are on the phone itself and can't be moved. I'd like to back them up before installing the update. (The OTA update didn't work - got stuck on the screen with the triangle - so I wanted to try Kevin's link.)

Thanks!
Linda

Coming from someone completely new to Android (switched from a Blackberry just last week)
PS: Thanks for the rec about tapatalk - looks great!

Another question :)
I managed to download the update from Kevin's link. Went through the steps listed - chose "install zip from sd card." Got this message:
Can't open /sdcard/update.zip
(No such file or directory)
installation aborted.

This is the same sort of message I got after the OTA update - it downloaded, but wouldn't install.

Any suggestions??

I'm running stock Android 2.2

Thank you!

PS: The zip file definitely IS listed on the sd card, at root level. (Originally it downloaded into the "downloads" folder - I tried it from there, it failed, so then I moved it out of the folder and into the root level of the card.

Although my computer showed the file on the sd card named "update.zip," the phone itself showed it named "update.zip.zip." Renamed it, and tried again (6th time?) Well, I got further, but still ultimately get "installation aborted."
(This time with an "status 7")

Any ideas?

[It's moments like this - after spending well over an hour fiddling around but still stuck - that I miss my Blackberry!]

Thank you,
Linda

Yeah, I figured that must be the case, so I renamed it just "update." The result then was the "Status 7" error and the update still didn't install. Any other suggestions?

Explain your situation to me. Are you completely stock? Have you flashed some sort of ROM? It is hard to do this from the app, so if you explain your situation I can give you a plan of attack when I'm at the computer tomorrow!

We will get through this, don't be reaching for the poor blackberry just yet :)

Thank you so much for offering to help! Here's the story. I am the 2nd owner of the G2. It had been factory reset when I got it (started with setup screen when I turned it on). I haven?t done anything to it other than install a few apps ? it shows ?Android 2.2? as the current operating system. I don?t know if the prior owner did any unauthorized updates or rom installs or anything like that. (I don?t know how to check ? but everything I can see seems to indicate it?s all just stock.) Until the issue with the update, the phone has worked great, and any "problems" have turned out to be operator error/ignorance. :)

I have three times gotten a notification that there was a system update ready to install (the last time was this morning). Each time I?ve tried to install OTA, the phone gets hung up on the screen with the triangle and explanation point and little android guy. (Starting with a 100% battery, and leaving the phone on and untouched for 2 hours so there?s no way I?m interrupting the process.) I then hit the power button briefly, it goes to the recovery screen, with the following message at the bottom:

ClockworkMod Recovery v3.0.0.5
Finding update package?
Opening update package?
Verifying update package?
E: failed to verify whole-file signature
E: signature verification failed
Installation aborted
By this point, I'm needing my phone, so I choose ?reboot system now.?

As detailed earlier in the thread, I also have tried installing using the zip file that Kevin posted. When I got to the recovery screen, I choose ?install zip from sdcard?
It then gets a little further, but ultimately gets stuck, with the ?Status 7? error message.

Reading up on the web, it sounds like the update SD card at T-Mobile stores doesn't actually work on the G2. Any other ideas? Or should I just be happy with 2.2? I was hoping for some improvements to wi-fi calling and the email - but it sounds like most people aren't seeing much difference, and 2.2 is nice and stable, so maybe I should stay put...

Any other thoughts? Thank you.

And the key word is...... Clockworkmod.

That is a custom recovery, which means that someone has rooted and/or flashed a custom rom on your device before. The OTA file you are trying to flash checks what recovery is being used, when it realizes it is not the stock one, it basically says "Hell no!" and errors out.

I'm going to link you to an article here
HTC Vision - XDA-Developers

And read this section-
Why did my OTA update fail installation?
There are several reasons an update fails. For users with a rooted stock ROM, you cannot flash an OTA update with ClockworkMod Recovery. You need to re-flash the stock recovery and try again. Specific files are patched by the updater-script and asserts checks that they have not been modified or removed. Developers posting "rooted stock" ROM's will typically "deodex" the apk files which changes the md5sum and causes them to fail the assert. The updater-script asserts sometimes check hboot version, CID and ROM build fingerprint as well.

There are instructions on how to restore stock recovery in the link above, which would allow you to use the stock ota file. I'm just concerned that you may not be on a fully stock rom, though the presence of an update notification leads me to believe that you are.... do you have the wifi calling app? If so we can probably narrow down that at least got the first G2 OTA.

My opinion is that you have two options. 1. Flash back to stock recovery following the instructions here [RECOVERY] Stock Img - xda-developers It should then allow the OTA to happen

2. You can flash a deodexed/rooted version of the OTA. But again you would need to be sure that you are on a stock rom and already received the first OTA (that included wifi calling).

Phew.... Ok. Just as a disclaimer, flashing things can be risky, and I take no responsibility for what may happen. I'm not the best at this, especially when I don't have the device in question right in front of me. I HIGHLY suggest you go to G2 and Desire Z - xda-developers and post your problem and see if you can get a pro to walk you through it. Or if you know how to use an irc chat room, go to #g2root and somebody is usually there who can help as well.

My opinion, is that Gingerbread is worth it. BUT if you don't feel like you have the technical know how, and you are happy with your phone as is...it is up to you. Before you decide I hope you go over to XDA, and see if somebody with a little more know how can reiterate the things I said before you try them though. I apologize I can't be of more help, but the person you got the phone from SHOULD have flashed you back to stock everything, because he left a custom recovery on there he screwed you over. I'm hesitant to say "flash this and all is good", just because I don't know if he did anything else to the phone we don't know about. I'm NSZ over at XDA as well, so feel free to contact on either forum if I can help at all!

Thank you so much! That was VERY helpful. I'll go see what I can learn on the xda site. As I said, the phone is working fine for me as is, so I'm not hugely urgent about figuring this out - just would like to get it solved at some point. (I do have wifi calling, but it doesn't work very well - I actually needed it earlier this week, and managed to make a call once, but couldn't get it working again after that. So I was hoping that the Gingerbread update perhaps included fixes for that.)

I'll also see if I can get any other information from the prior owner (ebay, so who knows, but he was pretty communicative during the sale).

Again, thank you very much for taking the time to respond so thoroughly. :)
