If I am right, to run CM 7 you have to be rooted. What is the benefit to that? I have not rooted because I have no clue how. I am still so new. The freedom Android and my EVO give is just awesome. What will rooting do more for me over the new update gingerbread?

Thanks for the advice in advance!!

CM7 IS gingerbread, except it is AOSP which is pure google android. The OTA from sprint will be HTC sense based.

Also, anything concerning root, belongs in the root section. I moved ya over this time, no worries :)

I felt the same way. But after reading over and over about how to root and what I should expect then I felt more confident, but I seriously read and read for a good 3 weeks before rooting. My advice is to take your time and keep researching. There are some good forums on rooting here. I have been rooted for 4 weeks now and I love it. I will say that you should at least be ready to look up and problems and questions you have. I found that 99% of the "issues" I've encountered after rooting were problems I created and there are answers, just got to do a little research. I wish you the best of luck! BTW- I used the "Universal Auto-Root" program found on xda-developers.com under the HTC EVO/ Development forum. I'd post the link but I'm on my phone lol

EDIT: Here is the link to the Universal Auto-Root Program. Only problem I had while rooting using this was the fact that my USB cord was old and would loose connection while the root was taking progress. The dev of the program was very responsive to my questions and also if you search the forum for this program there are answers to lots of questions. Again, good luck!

I think CM7 is a great base vanilla 2.3 Android ROM, My first Android phone was the Nexus One so I really got use to the vanilla Android... I traded my Nexus One for the EVO and Sense isn't bad.. Compared to all the other programs dressed over Android it's probably the best but I just missed that vanilla feel to Android... I love being rooted and I am not rooted to get anything past Sprint (Free Tether) I just loved the Vanilla feel and the ability to remove all the bloatware that Sprint throws at the phone.. I will never use the NASCAR, NFL or Sprint Zone Apps preinstalled.....

I think the best part of being rooted is just the ability to switch between different ROM's and get a great feel for what you really want to use. I think by far CM7 is the best (IMO) I have ran a few other sense and non-sense based ROM's as well as different Theme's and what not....

It will require a little more "WORK" in a way as you have to keep your radio's and what not manually updated as you wont get the auto updates from Sprint as you will with a stock right out the box ROM..

Good luck my friend.... Just read and read some more and make sure your ready before you do it... I flipped flopped for a couple of weeks before taking the plunge and I wouldn't go back...

+1 man!!

I'm with ya and both rooting to get the vanilla Android feel and CM7 being the best....I flashed a HELLUVA lot of ROMs and thought a few of them were the best...until I tried CM7..I love it!!

but everyone has a different taste. CM7, to me, may be the best, but for others Myn's Warm or MIUI might be the better choice.

back to the topic at hand:

yes, you have to be rooted to use CM7 or any custom ROM. since CM7 is Gingerbread 2.3, the OTA update wont be much different (well...the OTA will be HTC Sense-based whereas CM7 is AOSP (Android Open Source Project), which is a pure android exprience, thats a major difference :p )

@txfarmboy if you're thinking about rooting, do some research first. I was just like these other guys here, flip flopping between whether to root or not back when I had my Hero but I did my research and finally took the plunge and here I am now :D

also, since the update for 2.3 is right around the corner, you might wanna read this: [PSA][READ ME][FAQ] All about root and upcoming 2.3 gingerbread OTA update
