Gingerbread - Yawn?

As much as I'm inclined to agree, Apple has proved this wrong. The original iPhone lacked a number of features most smartphone users took for granted and it still sold really well. Of course, that's more due to Apple's marketing, and their ability to play on people's ignorance.

Or maybe due to the iPhone working very well for what it did, even though what it did was limited compared to other smartphones that were clunky, had annoying stylus input, and were complex to use.

I remember my Motorola Z8 "smartphone" running UIQ 3... what a mess that was lol... I don't think it's ignorance that a lot of people have chosen the iPhone, especially at a time where the iPhone really was a new way of interacting with a phone, more intuitive, etc. I've seen lots of people go for the iPhone, intelligent people, not ignorant people. Had an iPod Touch myself, 1st gen, and was a joy to use.

I'm just #@%@#% annoyed at all this anti-this anti-that crap. It's fine to love Android, but that doesn't mean you need to hate everything else, or follow the blind cultist mentality that's shown also in the Apple side of things. I mean come ON, give the iOS some credit, it really was different and started a new wave of phones out there. Was a breath of fresh air.

Patrix.

I have no problem admitting that Apple changed the game when it released the iPhone. When it was first released, it absolutely was nothing short of revolutionary. And I agree with you that it started what seems to be the Smartphone revolution -- I'll give Apple credit for that.

What I will not give Apple credit for is claiming they do everything "the best". Just recently, Steve Jobs said they waited as long as they did to implement multitasking because they wanted to do it right and it's now "the best multitasking platform available". -- BS. Android and webOS trump the iPhone in almost every way when it comes to multitasking, and this isn't the only feature Apple has had this attitude with. If Apple started making condoms -- they'd be the best damn condoms you could ever use.

THAT I think is what bugs a lot of people, myself included. Am I going to sit here and complain about it every day? Of course not, and of course there are going to be people out there who do it. I don't think it's right to take away what they started back in 2007 -- but I sure as hell am not going to give them the kind of credit that Jobs seems to think they're somehow entitled to.

True enough. The iPhone was a great phone for its day.

But I think you will find that The Android crowd is far more accepting of other technologies than the Apple fanboiz. We are interested in some features of the Palm Pre, and some even lust for a few Blackberry capabilities, we'd face time if we could.

Many of us have been Apple customers. Most of us would never go back. We can't stand the lock in, and we can't stand the cult mentality and the drool down the shirts of the fanboys every time Steve Jobs steps on stage.

Most Android users (or BB users) wouldn't even recognize the CEO of the company that made their phone or their operating system if he bit them in the ass.

I think what you and many others don't realize is the tweaks that go on behind the scene. The visual differences might not be much, but the "under the hood" stuff is very cool and does make a big difference. It did with Froyo and it will with Gingerbread as well.

My question is why are they "dumping" froyo so soon ?

Their not just making progress some of these features were demonstrate back when froyo was announced. I personally would have liked to see more but it looks like that will be hunnycomb which im content with ( the more being. Native dualcore support)

Has zip to do with smarphones. The iPhone couldn't do what a number of plain jane cell phones could do. You can sprinkle as much fairy dust as you want on it, but the bottom line, and the FACT of the matter is the iPhone lacked features that were common place on the vast majority of CELL PHONES out at it's release.

I remember my Motorola Z8 "smartphone" running UIQ 3... what a mess that was lol... Ignorance means a lack of knowledge, not that you're an idiot. People seem to forget that. You can have 5 doctorates and an off the chart IQ and still be ignorant about certain subjects.

You're delusional if you think the general populace isn't ignorant about many of the things they go out and buy, especially electronics (you can look around this forum for LOTS of evidence of this fact). I've had very intelligent people brag to me about all kinds of mundane things they can do on their phones, iPhone or not, and I just smile and nod because I've been doing the same things for months if not years on mine.

I'm just #@%@#% annoyed at all this anti-this anti-that crap. Credit where it's due, Apple makes good devices and iOS did help change the way we interact with our phones, but the fact of the matter is their marketing makes them out to be more than they actually are. I have no gripes with Apple's products, I just don't like the company (more specifically, their CEO), so I will not support them.

A great example of Apple's bs:
YouTube - Apple commercial: Network

They imply you cannot use a fancy new japanese digital camera on a PC, an outright fallacy.

All that said, Apple's marketing machine is one of the best, and it's because they can effectively play off of people's ignorance toward electronics. You may not like it, but it's a fact.

See Gingerbread improvements, Android 2.3 Features, ZDnet Top 10 2.3 Features. Also coming out along with Gingerbread is the new vector graphics Google Maps app and the new Gmail app. (Video)

So we will be seeing in Android and the basic apps:
? Improved UI
? New keyboard
? Enhanced Cut and Paste
? Better power management
? Improved App Management
? Expanded camera app
? Updated mail app
? New Vector Graphics map app
? New SIP
? Better gaming support

Oh, and some thingies under the hood.

You have every right to stay at 2.2.

Good luck!

Really disappointed that Gingerbread doesn't bring a new Music Player, Video Player and a much needed better Gallery app. Google's lack of focus on usability and reliability, and promoting something that's cool, yet rarely-to-never used, is kinda cheapening the OS. I remember with Froyo, they were all excited about the Gallery app album preview when you pinched it, WOW! How about you focus more on making the app reliable and usable if you have more than 10 pics instead a feature no one uses and quite honestly not that user-friendly in the first place.

Let me iterate that I love Google, love the apps and services they give us that make our life's easy, but they really, really need to work on bettering the things that the iOS excels in...chat, music, video, etc. It's 2011 (soon at least) and we still don't have video MMS. Come on.

Leaving updates up to the manufacturer is also slowly turning me off Android, big time! I was also hoping they would address this in Gingerbread.

Gingerbread better have at least added the ability to have fixed volume for the keyboard "click", WTF were they thinking having it controlled by the Media Volume.

2.2 and up is great, anything below needed improvements

New to this....how do you download 2.3 for here. Help plZ

You cant. Not Yet. Only way to have REAL Gingerbread 2.3 is to buy a Nexus S. If you wanna try it out though you could try an SDK rom, but since you say youre new to this that is probably not something you want to do.

Depending on what phone you have, there are ports being worked/released as I speak. Im waiting for the DInc port right now. Your best bet is to do some searching and see what you can find. As for instructions on how to install 2.3, the dev that created the port should have direction for that specific device.

I guess I will be waiting quite a while for this update. And I doubt their will be a port for the droid2/x due to kernel. Shoot I expect to have a new device before the d2 sees 2.3

Poor Bizz, if your phone breaks again tell them you want a DInc haha. There has to be somebody who will be able to port it. What about when Cyanogen releases his rom? Is the Kernel and issue with the current release of Cyanogenmod?

With a lot of the apps being updated this week is there a chance that the new OS is coming son? I noticed this happening with the last few upgrades.

Lots of apps being updated because the new Gingerbread SDK has been out a couple of weeks. That's all.

At this time the noise around the web is January for ginger.

Hard to say, it depends on a lot of things. If you're referring to Gingerbread, unless you have the N1, it's really going to depend on how long the manufacturer takes to cook it up for your phone and your carrier takes to push it out to you.

Thanks Chris. Yeah I am talkin about GB. I am in no rush but was thinking it might be on the way soon with almost all of my apps getting updates this week. Hope the bluetooth build and the battery firmware get fixed soon.

Gongerbread requires gingerbread initramfs which is in the boot.img, which is basically in the same position as the kernel as far as efuse and locked bootloader goes.

I think everybody's expectations of a point release are a tad too high. Gingerbread brings plenty of improvements and enhancements..

-UI refinements
-Faster, better keyboard
-Better power management
-Task manager is easier to get to.
-Internet calling -- SIP support!
-Near-field communications (NFC) for purchases and the like
-Better downloads management.

Baby steps people, baby steps. Android got to where it is because of 2 years of small tweaks and improvements with every update. If you're not happy with Gingerbread, try to use a G1 on 1.0 for a week. That's how these things get better. Baby steps.

These updates don't write themselves. I don't even want to think about the amount of hours that went into this update. I for one am perfectly happy with the Gingerbread announcement.
I've found that movies play is slow and jerky... do you know why?
