i used the gmail app as well as gmail website (on laptop).
i have "conversation view" turned off on the website (as i prefer to not have them all grouped together).
the gmail app doesn't seem to have the option to turn this off though, unless i'm missing a setting somewhere????

in gmail go to general settings and then down to auto-advance and thump that and deselect conversation view. bam

i have three options there.

Newer
Older
Conversation list

i can't simply deselect "conversation list", i have to select one of the other options.

newer puts newer emails near top
older puts older emails at top

there is only so many ways the phone can display them. so choose one

i'm just trying to make it look the same as on gmail.com
the ordering on website is newest email at the top (ie sort date descending)

that setting didn't make any difference.
emails are still grouped in conversation list even when using "newer" or "older".
that setting appears to be specific to showing something after archiving or deleting an email

This is because the option to turn off conversation view simply does not exist on Android.

Its been the subject of many heated discussions on the net, but Google goes with the approach of deciding for us what we should have, as opposed to letting us do so. Not as bad as Apple, but still annoying.

except they give us the option on web version, so a bit inconsistent there.

Not just annoying - DANGEROUS and time wasting: I tried to delete the annoying bits of a conversation, and lost all the important bits too.

Then I went behind the scenes to retrieve the ones I wanted from the bin, and made a fatal mistake of pausing the cursor by the "delete forever" button instead of the Move To button. And it doesn't ask for confirmation at that stage, of course. OK that bit was my fault, but I was only there because of the foolishness that is the default conversation view. As you see, I am not a fan, even if I think that the overall advantages of the set of Google tools is (usually) worth the occasional frustrations.

Conversation view DOES NOT WORK. It combines conversations which are NOT related, merely based on similar subject lines (or something) and does not allow us to tease them apart again. We want to organise our own lives, thank you very much, Google. PLEASE TA LEAST WARN US when you add undesirable features into upgrades of your basic tools

Eventually allowing us to get rid of conversation view on the web app was the best clean up of gmail possible, and took far too long for such a trivial reversion!

The forced Conversation View was what lead me to seek an alternative app. I ultimately settled on Blue Mail and could not be happier. Blue Mail is especially nice if you have multiple accounts and want to have a Unified Inbox.

You are right, there are only so many settings. And NONE of them do what you say they will. Has ANYONE found a way to turn off conversations on the gmail app on the Galaxy S5? Conversations should not be part of Gmail.

Re: Gmail app - conversation view THIS WORKED FOR ME

Okay people who hate the conversation view in Gmail on their android phone, I have a solution:
This worked for me. Delete or disable the GMail app in your phone, then set up your account(s) in the built in EMail app, but set up the accounts by choosing OTHER EMAIL ACCOUNT and then set it up as IMAP and set all of the settings MANUALLY! And I no longer have the conversation view on any of my three gmail email accounts I read on my Motorola Droid turbo!!!
(If you need the settings for IMAP they are here: google. ncsu. edu/gettingstarted/imap-settings )

Re: Gmail app - conversation view THIS WORKED FOR ME

This may work for home users but most organizations such as mine have disabled IMAP for security reasons. Life would be a little easier if Conversation View was not forced upon users in the Gmail Mobile App.

You are right.
