Gmail app unread count

Anyone know how to get the Gmail app to show an unread count? I find it interesting that the Mail app will show unread messages but the Gmail app does not. Is there a setting I'm missing or is the function not available?

I know there is capability to do this with ADW Notifier (and other add-on apps), however I know with the recent upgrade of GMail to (i believe) 2.3.5, this feature was broken. I'm sure they will update once they know the culprit.
