Gmail connection problem

Lately, I have been receiving a 'no connection' error message when I open Gmail. This happens both with and without WiFi connected. I can understand that this error message would appear if I didn't have the phone on a WiFi connection, because I typically have only two bars of signal strength inside.

If I press retry when this error message comes up and the phone is connected on WiFi, the messages will load.

Why is this error message coming up?

I've had this issue as well, but it seemed to resolve itself when I ODINed to stock EB13. (Having other issues now, but on a custom ROM, so they're not pertinent to your issue.)
