AT&T Galaxy S8 Gmail Contacts Label / Group not playing nice

So, on Gmail I have, in addition to a number of others, a Family label with about 29 contacts in it.



Everything synced to my phone without issue. Except for the Family label (group on the phone). My phone says I now have some 366 contacts in my Family.



Opening several contacts shows that they may belong to this or that Group, but not the Family one even though they show up in the Family group.

Any idea what caused this, or how to fix it?

I've had something similar happen, guess it gets its little brain scrambled and just gives up. Suggest you go to your online account, I believe you can choose all the contacts in Family, remove them, then add those back you want. Sorry, that's the best I've got.

Update:
So, I tried deleting the Gmail label and phone group. I re-created the group and things looked OK.

Then I noticed, as time passed, that contacts would suddenly appear in the Family group again. Interestingly, they never appear in the Family label in Gmail. I have not been able to find a pattern or reason why they suddenly appear in the Family group, yet.

For now, I have resorted to simply doing cleaning in the group, removing contacts once a week.

If anyone knows why this is happening, or how to keep it from continue to happen, I would love to know.
