gmail not receiving notifications since priority inbox

Ever since, whatever update to the native gmail app, added the"priority inbox", I have not received notifications. In fact, no mail shows up in my inbox at all (neither priority our regular inboxes). I have to open the all mail label and then my inbox (and priority inbox) populates and my phone registers a notification. This is extremely annoying since I used to be able to know exactly when I received a new message, and now I have to check repeatedly throughout the day. I've tried some different settings in the app and on the web, but I just wish I could completely get rid of the priority inbox in the app altogether as I really don't need it.

Interesting. I have the Priority Inbox (never even noticed it until you mentioned it, I just checked and saw it underneath the regular Inbox in Labels). I do not have this problem thankfully. Have you tried going in and clearing the data, cache, etc in Manage Apps? I assume it couldn't hurt, but, you never know. I'd probably give that a try if I were you and I was as fed up as you sound.

Or, have you gone into Accounts and looked at the sync options of gmail in there? Maybe try unchecking Snyc Gmail for an hour or so, then recheck it?

Other than that, I can't think of anything else. Hopefully one of those two ideas get you somewhere!!

Both good thoughts that I haven't tried. I'll let you know how it goes. The sync options on the app are sort of confusing. You have the option of making the priority inbox as your default inbox, which presumably just means it will open to that inbox when you first open the app. For syncing you can sync never, sync 4 days, and sync a week. I think this means how far back it will look at your mail and load it to the app. Right now I have priority inbox set to sync never and on the main gmail site I have it set to not apply filters to my inbox which I believe should make it so that, my mail is not differentiated between priority and non priority. I'm no longer getting priority marked messages they all say "inbox"but I still have to open all mail label to see my inbox messages. It takes approx 45 sec after doing that for my mail notification to sound and the messages to appear in the inbox label. I noticed this started behaving this way right after they added the priority mail support to the app. I finally found some time to try digging into it and am now more frustrated than when I just ignored it, because I can't seen to figure out what I'm doing wrong if anything.

Ok. Seams that uninstalling all updates and updating from the market, is the fix in this particular case.

Interesting. Mine says sync four days and I have mail in my inbox from like 10 days ago that is showing up on my phone. Now idea what sync could mean then.

Wow, that's a really strange bug. Sometimes my phone beats my browser to knowing I have new messages. It's almost instantaneous. And, that is what I expect, so, I would have hated what you had to deal with, haha. But, I'm glad you got your issue worked out and thanks for posting your fix!!

Thank you for your ideas. Your suggestion for clearing the app cache, put me on to uninstalling the updates. It's been working flawlessly all night. I had forgotten what it was like to hear my notification several times in a night! I still wish I had the option to remove some of the more useless labels...maybe I should check out a third party mail app.

Hey, no problem. Yea, I hear ya, I love hearing that notification noise. :D Well, if you log into gmail in a web browser, there is a drop down at the top for Labels. You can click on that --> Manage Labels, and can get rid of some of them there. I would assume that this would sync up with your phone.

Also, don't forget to hit the Thanks Button. I know I didn't solve your problem, but, like you said, I helped. :p

There are other e-mail apps besides GMail.....;)

Haha. I have had zero problems with my gmail app. But, I'm curious what app you use Moscow.

Yeah, I know. I've been cool with the gmail native cuz it had been simple and clean. I'm definitely looking for another solution now, because <surprise!> my fix worked for about twelve hours and is back to the same thing as of this afternoon.

Yeah I tried the manage labels. It only seems to affect the web based account. I've left feedback with google, whatever good that might do.

Forgive me, I'm a nube here. What does the thank button do for you? I've seen it, but wasn't really:-[ sure of it's purpose, other than the obvious (to say thanks). Does it give you some credit of some sort? Again, forgive my ignorance.:-[

Awww, that sucks man!! Did you try the other things I suggested? I just remember you saying both good thoughts I didn't try or something. Haha. I'll keep thinking on this one and see if I can come up with anything. Do you have another Android phone lying around that you could try activating and see if you get your notifications correctly with that one? Just a thought. That is really a long shot and a hassle and probably something I'd save for your last resort options. Just a thought.

Aww, that's really dumb. I don't know why that wouldn't snyc up. But, good for you for leaving feedback. It's sorta like not voting, if you don't do it, don't complain. You get to complain about this now because you went to the source. :D

Uhh, ya know, I'm not really sure. I think there are similar things in lots of forums on the internet. I think it's really just a vanity thing, but, I can't say that officially. I just assumed that's what it was. I don't really get anything out of coming on here, reading posts, and, trying to help people out. I think my time spent on the forums has been like, 95% give, 5% take, so, for me, the thanks makes me feel good because other people might see how many times I've been thanked and been like, oh, that guys helpful. Seems silly, and vain, I know, but, it's kinda fun. And, a verbal thanks for helping someone is nice, but, since there is a "thanks" counter, if it never gets clicked once and I'm here for a year and help countless people, it's looks like I've just posted a lot and I've been useless. I dunno, haha.

If you go into Settings>Labels to notify. There is two option for notifications.
One for Inbox and one for Priority Inbox.

I've noticed before doing an update on an application it would be best to uninstall & reinstall the app. Unless it's an application that has some important data that you don't want to lose.

It's all good! I don't think it's vain, just was wondering if something specific happened with the thank button. I appreciate you and anyone else who takes the time to help out our just read and opine on my general *****iness. Many thanks to all!
As far as the gmail, I'm backing off on that for now, as I am having much more fun trying to customize icons with desktop visualizer. if I discover anything new though, I will post it here.

Yeah that's pretty much what I did. You can't completely uninstall gmail, as it is stock in the phone, but you can uninstall all updates and reinstall to current. And there is really nothing to lose as it just syncs to your gmail account, I just don't want to go through this process every day or so.

Well good!! Hehe. :D Nah, it's all good man. No one knows everything, and, everyone needs help. That's why forums exist!!

Nice!! It's good sometimes to take a break when trying to solve a problem and focus on other things. Who knows, if you back off on it like you are saying, maybe a solution will come to you when you aren't even thinking about it. Or, when you come back to it fresh. Hope you figure it out eventually. Or, someone does.
