Gmail number notification

[AC Question]

On my galaxy 6s why don't I get a number on the little envelope that's on my home page indicating how many unread e-mails I have. My galaxy 4 did it. I don't know if I have emails unless I click on it. I turned off sound notification because it goes on all night.
