Gmail sync (push) is unreliable for me with stock Gmail app

I set up my gmail as normal and use the stock google gmail app. When I receive an email is highly variable. There have been times I saw the email come in at gmail.com web interface but it was hours before it showed up on the phone. Other times it's a minute or two, but in many tests I've done myself I always see it pop up on the web interface so I know gmail received it from my other email account. Sometimes I get impatient and in the gmail app I just pull down to refresh, and the mail shows up. I would have thought with a stock app and being android and all, that gmail of all things would work well. Anyone else have this problem?

I use exchange also with Samsung's stock email app, and incoming mail and notifications so far have been timely.

Happened to me and I may have fixed it. Go into Battery in Settings, Battery Usage, More, and then Optimize Battery Usage. Touch Apps Not Optimized and turn off gmail. Tell me if it worked!

Make sure in your Gmail settings that you have sync all & notify when each email comes through.

I have sync all and notify. I tried luke31's suggestion. I'll test it more out later, I tried twice. First one came within seconds, another email about a minute later. Maybe the problem is on google's side with doing the pushes.
