Gmail syncing email and contacts when both settings are turned off

I added my exchange work account to my phone. All I want to do is sync my calendar, I turned off contact and email sync but the gmail app is still syncing both. I’ve gone through all of the settings and I don’t see anything that applies. Is there something I’m missing?

Settings/Apps/Gmail - disable it. Or, if you still want it for personal accounts, remove your work account from only the Gmail app.

For contacts, if you don't want a contact synced to Google, enter it as a Phone contact, not as a Google contact.

Thanks for the response. I don’t mind the gmail app but I still want to sync my calendar. Is there another way to sync my calendar without using the gmail app?
