Well... we made it to Mexico and the urgency to have phone access has taken a back seat to just enjoying this beautiful weather. We have Wi-Fi and our laptops... so have been communicating with friends and family via SKYPE (video calling).

One thing I have to post however is that I received a SKYPE call while on my phone and out of curiousity AND MUCH TO MY SURPRISE... VIDEO calling WORKS on the RHDM. I thought I had read that the video part wasn't implemented yet. This was a laptop to RHDM call. Very cool.

Going to Mexico with a plan from your current carrier is a BAD idea...... #1 its not guaranteed and they will pass on charges at a later date. # 2, your phone is out of warranty and if if something happens like lost, stolen or damaged...... That your problem!
Going to Mexico and buying a SIM is not the solution, your phone is locked and will not accept a Mexico SIM, in addition, if your cell is unlocked, the air-time is NOT for long distance or international calling.... You will regret it BIGTIME! Visit Mobile Phone Solutions for Travelers | ROAMFREE Mobile because they set you up with a handset, sim and unlimited talk, text, and data for Europe and Mexico. Best thing I ever did..... Salute!

This phone is NOT locked for non-US SIMs. It will only not work with US non-Verizon SIMSs, like AT&T.

I wouldn't go so far as to call this post spam, but it is lacking in accuracy.

Definitely.
1. Roaming charges vary by carrier, so this is a bad idea. Verizon used to have an agreement and when I went to Cancun years ago, it just worked with no additional charges.
2. Assurion doesn't void your insurance and your warranty definitely isn't void. Been there, done that.
3. All Verizon LTE phones running ICS or later are unlocked for international SIM cards. Phones are locked for domestic GSM carriers.

Anyway Skype and just live with the price for receiveing texts.
