hi, thanks for replying. I wouldn't mind not having sat-images. A basic map/drawing of the course that allows gps-location matching would suite my needs.
I am especially interested in this. I am an Assistant Golf Course Superintend. I have used several golf gps apps on iphone, blackberry, and now android. I have not tried skydroid but it is now on my list to try.
Can't wait to try skydroid as soon as I get my Epic. I'm also going to try Freecaddie. Can either of these programs handle 9-hole rounds? I play in a league where we play 9 (alternating front and back on the course), so this would be a very useful feature. Shot tracking and Score keeping are pluses for me, but not necessarily required.
I'm curious if there are any updates on the apps mentioned here previously.

UShandicap.com has additional services that cost from $14.95 for a simple USGA handicap (instead of joining your local club) to $39.95 and $99.95 for more robust memberships. This is a nice feature. My local men's club charges $65/year.
2. GolfShot -- $29.99. Nice feature of allowing to check distances on the screen by touching the hole map. Has other features on each hole that look useful, such as hazards and layup options.
3. GolfLogix -- $39.95 a year. Has an online systems that syncs the scores. It has a nice set of features and a loyal customer following.
There are dozens of GPS tracking apps, so I didn't bother reviewing them all. I want a more full featured product.
I used Intelligolf through several PalmOS phones. I really liked having the ability to map a course, including hazards and yard markers, on the fly and the desktop software was great. But, it seems they have shut down development as nothing has happened with any of the platforms such as Android and IPhone (neither of which is new anymore).
I'd be interested in real world reviews of these programs, or suggestions for an alternative. As with other golfers, I'm willing to pay for quality (within reason). Right now $10.99 one time looks a lot better than $39.99 a year. But, $29.99 one time is within the budget.

More digging revealed YourGolf. It is a free app that syncs to OobGolf.com. I don't know much about the websites, but OobGolf seems to be preferred by many over competing sites such as USHandicap.com. Though, it does seem that OobGolf has a dubious reputation with golf app developers in the IPhone community.
Any experience with this app? I'm playing in the morning and plan to try out some of the free versions.

I tried YourGolf recently. It is a nice free app for score keeping. I liked how quick it was to respond. It had really good battery usage; lasted the whole round (about 3 1/2 hours) with plenty to spare.
I did not care for the GPS. Rather than mapping the course and giving distances to the green and obstacles, it relies upon Google Maps and places concentric circles from your position onto the map. The default view is color mock-up of the course with no definition. You cannot tell where anything is on the course. You can click on a button and it pulls up the satellite image for your immediate area. This is better as you can see the green and obstacles. The challenge is the circles are marked at the two axes (N/S, E/W) and the distances are lost upon zooming in if the axis does not appear on the screen.
Another gripe is the score keeping, while quick, is not readily robust. It automatically allows you to select the club, but does not automatically allow you to note the result of the shot. To note the result, you have to go edit the hole and edit the shot -- a time consuming process when trying to get to your shot at the same time.
I did like that after the round it can update directly to Oob Golf. That process was very easy. It also allows you to e-mail a nice image of your scorecard. This was hand for posting my scores on a different site -- as I had the hole-by-hole scores.
Finally, a pet peeve. With 2.2 Froyo some apps can be loaded onto the SD Card. This is not one of them. I have Moto Droid (the first one) and constantly struggle with having enough space in the main memory for apps. I don't see a reason why this app could not reside on the memory card.

This is a new app of Golf. I used it on the iphone. It's really nice and accurate. Pretty young in comparaison with the iphone version, but it gonna be a huge app on our OS !! let's try it guys

I'm actually the developer of SkyDroid. So I wanted to spread the word. We're only charging 99 cents right now for SkyDroid.
We are still building our course list, but we have a tool online where users can map any course and then download it to the app. So we've given people the resources to get GPS for any golf course in the world for 99 cents. We're getting 10-15 new courses a day added to our system by users.
The app gives you distances to the Front, Center and Back of every green as well as distances to features that have been mapped like bunkers, water hazards and target points.
You can also get satellite view of any hole you are playing and get distance to ANY point on the satellite map even if it hasn't been mapped already.

I've just bought a Creative ZEN Touch 2 and would like to install SkyDroid but is told that my account don't have a phone registered. That is true I don't have an android phone, but my Touch 2 is running android 2.2. How Can I buy SkyDroid?
I use Golflogix on my Thunderbolt, I like it a lot except for I don't know why it chances the display settings to whatever you have it set to, to always be on, which would probably explain the poor battery performance, since the display is a huge battery drainer. If you either set the display settings to something else or remember to turn off the display after you get the distance you need it seems to last for a full round. I like the stat charting of the program and that it saves your info in the "cloud". Haven't tried any others but am considering skydroid after so many mentions of it here.

I have been using SkyDroid for quite a while. Great app! A friend with a $30 golf app(on an iPhone) and I were standing next to a 150 yard marker on a course and his showed 128 yards and mine showed 149! LOL! I have tried a lot of them and like this the best...Skydroid is available for iPhone as well, FWIW

I don't remember what I paid for it back then, but I think it was $0.99. It's listed for $1.99 now. Whatever the price, it's worth it. I've used it on every course I've played, even when the carts have GPS installed. Guess what. Accurate. And I can carry it right to my ball. So, if you're looking for perfect, SkyDroid is it!

Does anyone know if there is a GPS golf app that allows you to download satellite images of courses to your device (I have a tablet - google nexus 7) while you are online (via wireless), and then use that app while offline (no 3G, no wireless)? It seems like an app like this should exist. The tablet has a GPS receiver, so if it had pre-loaded maps on the device it should be able to give you locations and calculate distances on that map. But from my search of various apps it seems like they all need 3G. Does anyone know of an app that has this feature?
