I am thinking about coming over from the pre, how would I go about getting my contacts out. As soon as they activate the droid and my number is ported over I will not be able to get into the Pre. What can I do?

I switched form a Pre, and this is is a really easy one to answer. The Pre syncs your contacts with Google, Android syncs your contacts with Google. You don't need to "bring" anything over it will happen automatically. Not 100% sure about the Droid although I am fairly positive this is the case, but you can also sync with Facebook and it will "synergy" your google and facebook contacts into a single contact (like the Pre). The Pre is cloud based like Android for contacts and calander entries so you should be good to go the moment you finish setting up the Droid (at least I was on the N1).

Call me dumb but what google? Are you talking about Gmail. I know I can pull contacts from facebook but a lot of people do not have their number listed. I also have just a yahoo email account.

Sorry, I meant Gmail contacts (which keep track of email, phone number(s), birthday, etc.) If you don't have a gmail account, you can always create one to sync your contacts before you move from the Pre to an Android phone. Personally I'd recommend that anyway since the Pre can also sync with the Google Calendar as well allowing you to bring those entries from a Pre to Android pretty easily.

Basically, sign up for a gmail account. Activate Google Calendar, Picasaweb, Gdocs, etc and transfer all the stuff from the Pre into these Google accounts that are now linked to your gmail, including your emails and contacts.

Emails and contacts > Gmail
Photos > Picasaweb
Notes and documents > Google Docs / Gdocs
Calendar > Google Calendar

When you get your Android phone sign into Google during setup and then set everything to synchronise in Settings > Data Synchronization > Google Server Settings.

If you have stuff on Google Docs then download gdocs from the market.

If you have set up a Picasaweb account with your gmail then get Colourful Life from the market.

Simples.

Phil.
